Hello and welcome. You’re listening to cities today. Sometimes it seems

impossible to make connections in big city but this morning we’re
looking at three ways people are connecting with others, in large cities
around the world. The first way people are connecting with each other is
by playing ping pong. One day, two ping pong tables appeared. In Bryant
Park, New York City soon, people from all walks of life were meeting
their regularly to play some players became really good friends. Some
helped each other find jobs and places to live. Almost every found
support and kindness. How and why did the tables appear there?
Professional ping pong player Walley Green put the tables in Bryant Park
because he wanted more people to enjoy the game. He comes to the
park and plays ping pong with people time to time and he's pleased with
the positive effects of his gift. This generous donation has made a
difference in the community. Another way people are connecting with
each other is through pianos. In public spaces, Pianos have appeared on
city streets, around the world from Eureka Chile to Tokyo Japan And
they aren't ordinary pianos artists have painted the pianos in beautiful
colors. People gather around the pianos and discuss them And people of
different musical abilities, sit down and play them. British artist. Luke
jerem. Got the idea for the project in 2008, He thought the pianos would
bring people together. Today there are over 2 000 pianos in. 65 cities
around the world In some cases, the pianos have made a big difference
in people's lives In Sao Paulo, for instance, jara met a woman who
worked as a cleaner. She could pay for piano lessons for her daughter,
but not for an actual piano. She was finally able to hear her daughter
play on one of Sao Paulo's 13th, Street pianos, and see for herself how
much her daughter had learned. Finally, people are connecting with
each other by eating lunch together. A simple idea, right? Well, one day
in April 2017, people in towns and cities all over Chile. Participated in a
collaborative lunch. It was called El Gran Malone or the big lunch. The
idea came from an organization in the United Kingdom called. The Eden
project, The idea of the luck, lunch is to bring people together and make
communities stronger. Thousands of people participate in big lunches
each year And many say that the event helps them make new friends.
They also get the chance to discuss ways to deal with important
neighborhood issues, such as parking crime, safety, and waste
Management. The big lunch idea has been such a success in Chile that
now, El Grand Malone is a national holiday. So making connections in a
city can happen in different ways. Over a game of ping pong while
playing music or over a tasty meal.
