Storage

Storage

Objective
To understand that coatings must be stored in the correct manner prior to use.

Basic storage details will be on product data sheets.

All products should be suitably stored.
A dedicated paint store should always be available and paints should not be mixed with general
consumables.

Coating Delivery
When the coatings are delivered the store's person should check
the delivery note to ensure the coatings match the purchase order
and there are no missing items and there is no obvious damage or
leaks.

Certificates of conformity may be also delivered along with the

health and safety data sheets.

The coating material should be taken to the paint store and stored
safely ready for use. In some instances, the coating material may
be delivered directly to the workplace.

Always check the storage conditions on the coating

manufacturers data sheets.

Paint Storage
This paint store must meet the requirements of any Health and
Safety legislation:

Ensure you have flammable proof building and materials.

Ensure you have the correct lighting and heating.

Some paint stores have to have special roofs installed.

Ensure there is adequate ventilation.

Be aware Health and Safety regulations may change from country

to country.

Paint Stores
Ensure you have fire extinguishers available in or close to the
paint store.
Ensure the correct type of extinguishers are available and the
type displayed.
Ensure that operatives have been trained and can use fire
extinguishers.
Periodically check the fire extinguishers as these have to be
tested on a regular basis.

Paint Stores

Paint should not be stored too high unless you have specialist
lifting equipment.
Some coatings, such as heavily pigmented coatings can be
extremely heavy and must be stored at ground level.
Always keep paint stores clean and tidy.
Some paint stores are purpose made with special flooring,
lighting and heating.

Typical Paint Store

Always ensure:

You store paint correctly.

You keep two-part coatings together.
You keep the heaviest tins or containers at a low level.
You rotate batches periodically and use the oldest material
first.

The paint store should not be used to store other products,

especially flammable and hazardous materials.

Paint Store Temperatures

Some coatings can be temperature sensitive.

Paint stores should have minimum and maximum

thermometers installed.

Some coatings, such as water-based products can be

damaged below zero degrees and the paint is unusable.
Monitor the conditions in the store and install safe heating if
necessary.

Shelf Life of Paints

If paints are left in an unprotected store or left for long periods of
time, thickening or settlement may occur.

Check the batch numbers and date of manufacturer on the product

label before removing from the paint store.

If in doubt about the batch number or the batch number is difficult

to read contact the paint supplier.

Health and Safety

The Health and Safety regulations should be strictly enforced in

and around paint stores:

The paint store is a no smoking zone.

Paints should not be mixed in the paint store.
Never leave open containers of paints or solvents in the paint
store.
Do not use the paint store as a general consumable store.

Signage
Ensure everybody is fully aware of what is contained in the stores!

Most people are aware that paint is flammable and dangerous.

The flammable and no smoking signs etc should still be used

also.

Paint Material on Site

Always bring unused tins of paint back to the paint store at
the end of the shift.
Always ensure that both parts to two part paints are collected
and stored together.
Never leave paint on a site, either opened or unopened.
Review your method statements for paint mixing and storage.
Have spillage kits available and a plan in place for such
events.

Note; It may be possible to store part mixed paint providing they

are not two-part and have suitable lids.

Site Storage
Many sites have limited space, especially for hazardous materials.
It is possible to get smaller paint stores which can be moved
around without the need for special lifting equipment etc.

The stores should be clearly marked as paint stores and

hazardous materials and must be securely locked when not in
use.

Heating
Most paints should be stored in a relatively warm environment.

No coatings (especially water-based products) should be stored

below zero degrees centigrade (32o F) as this could damage the
coating.

Most solvent-based coatings should be stored above 10o C (50o F).

Always check the specification and data sheets from the paint
supplier.

Where heating is required this should be Intrinsically safe heating

specifically developed for hazardous locations such as paint
stores.

Lighting
Paint stores should have good lighting to ensure;

The protective coating operative (storeman) is working in a

light safe environment
The products and labels can be read ensuring the correct
products are selected

The lighting must be intrinsically safe as the paint store is

classified as a hazardous area.

General Rules
Finally some general rules for paint a store:

The Paint store design should meet the requirements of local

Health and Safety regulations.
The correct type fire extinguishers should always be available.
Paint stores are no smoking areas.
Paint tins should not be stored too high.
Thermometers should be installed.
Paints should be rotated.
The paint store should be clean and tidy.
Correct signage should be used.
Discard old tins!

Summary
In this training unit we have reviewed the use of paint stores.

We have reviewed the requirements for a paint store, the potential

hazards, temperature and lighting requirements, the type of
signage and fire fighting equipment.
