COURSE DESCRIPTION:
First and foremost, this is an introductory course in the field of International Relations. The goal of
this course is to acquaint students with the concepts, terminologies ideas, jargons and analytical tools
necessary to understand state behavior and relations among actors in the International System.
Moreover, course aims to examine various theoretical explanations for state behaviors, such as
Realism, Liberalism, Marxism, Environmentalism and Feminism etc. Not only this, these theories
will be used to analyze the forces that affect state behavior and address some of the most pressing
questions prevalent in international arena.
However, the primary aim of this course is to inculcate and develop critically engaged citizens with
an interest in World affairs. It is intended to provide students with much needed background to
contemporary global developments featured in the news every day. While headlines and news
bulletins may capture the latest events or mesmerize observers with the eye-catching details but are
often left without sufficient background information to fully understand and analyze factors which
may have led to the day's crises along with their potential future course of actions.
The moderator’s goal is to take some of the “surprise” out of morning headlines and enable students
to understand what's happening before it does. Through lectures and presentations, students will
learn about important geographical and geostrategic factors contributing to the menu of political
crises. The class will address key historical events and political factors behind the headlines, detailed
information about the current situation, and assessments of potential political outcomes.
In the end, the idea of this course is to create an environment to foster an appreciation for
independent and out-of-the-box thinking. By constantly engaging students with frank exchanges of
ideas and debate, the moderator will critically evaluate and respect different viewpoints.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• Highlight the significance and vitality of the basic fundamentals related to the field of
International Relations and Strategic Studies.
• Identify accurately the major theories and dominant paradigms used in the study of
International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis including Realism/Neo-Realism,
Liberalism/Neo-Liberalism, Marxism/Neo-Marxism, Environmentalism and Feminism.
• Provide students with the much needed background information to the international
developments and help them comprehend the relations between and among states which
shape up the broader picture of international Affairs.
• Develop an understanding of causes of war and other forms of conflict, role of different
international organizations and non-state actors in influencing actions of states and issues that
concern today’s international relations in the formulation of states foreign policy decisions.
• Encourage students to "follow the news" of today's principal global events and improve oral

and written presentation skills using simulations of events typical of the policy making
environment.
