1. The shaft of the crank lever is loaded by force through a vertical pin and base plate as
shown in fig. 1 below. The pin is subjected to a vertical force of 8kN at c. An axial thrust
of 5kN is acting at D on the base plate which may be approximated as equivalent axial
force acting on the shaft AB and its other effect could be ignored. The shaft AB
supported at Point A. the yield stress for the shaft material is taken as 300Mpa and n = 3.
Calculate the diameter of shaft AB. Use shock and fatigue factor in bending and torsion
as 2 and 1.5 respectively.

2. The 1 in diameter solid steel shaft shown in fig. 2 is simply supported at the ends. Two
pulley are keyed to the shaft where pulley A is of diameter 8.0 in and pulley B is 5.0 in.
a. Determine the reaction forces
b. Draw the shear force and Bending moment diagram
c. Draw the torsion diagram

4. A solid steel shaft of diameter D carries end loads P, M, and T. Determine the factor of
safety n, assuming that failure occurs according to the following criteria:
a. Maximum shear stress.
b. Maximum energy of distortion.
Given: Sy=260 MPa, D=100 mm, P=50 kN, M=5 kN ⋅ m, T=8 kN ⋅ m
5. A solid steel shaft of diameter D is supported and loaded as shown in Figure 4.
Determine the critical speed in rpm. Given: D=25 mm, E=210 GPa.

6. A solid shaft of diameter D rotates and carries the minor shock loading, as shown in
Figure 5. Calculate the factor of safety n for the shaft using the maximum energy of the
distortion theory of failure combined with the Goodman criterion.
Given: D=75 mm, Sy=550 MPa, Su=660 MPa. The torque fluctuates 5% each way from
the mean value, and the shaft is to be machined from unnotched steel
