Zoo Project Worksheet

Student Name: __________________________________________________________

Date: ________________ Class: ____________________________________________

Part 1: Calculate the Total Search Area:

E = Entrance Z = Zebra House G = Giraffe House

H = Hippo House T = Tiger House

Use the Law of Sines to and the area formula using the sine ratio to find each of the following
lengths (to the nearest whole foot), areas (to the nearest whole square foot) and angle measures
(to the nearest whole degree). Show all your work for full credit.

1. ∠𝐺𝐸𝑍 =

2. ∠𝐸𝐺𝑍 =

3. 𝐸𝑍 =

11. ∠𝐻𝐸𝑇 =

12. Area of Δ𝐸𝐻𝑇 =

13. Use the Law of Sines on Δ𝐸𝑇𝑍 to find 𝑍𝑇. How does it compare to the length of 𝑍𝑇 you find
when you simply add up the lengths of 𝑍𝐺, 𝐺𝐻, and 𝐻𝑇? What do you think might account for any
difference you find?

14. Find the area of Δ𝐸𝑇𝑍 by adding the areas of Δ𝐸𝑍𝐺, Δ𝐸𝐺𝐻, and Δ𝐸𝐻𝑇.

15. Find the area of Δ𝐸𝑇𝑍 by using 𝐸𝑍, 𝑍𝑇, and sin 𝑍.

16. Find the area of Δ𝐸𝑍𝑇 by using 𝑍𝑇, 𝐸𝑇, and sin 𝑇.

17. Find the area of Δ𝐸𝑍𝑇 by using 𝐸𝑍, 𝐸𝑇, and sin 𝐸.

18. By how many square feet do your largest and smallest measurements from #14-17 differ?
Take that difference and divide it by the smallest area you found, then multiply by 100. This
is the percentage of error in the calculations. Do you think this error is a big deal?

Part 2: Analysis of the Search Options:

Use the smallest area you found for #14 – 17 and the “Costs for Each Search Option” document to
complete this part of the worksheet.

Search Option 1: Individual Searchers on the Ground

19. Given the conditions described on the “Costs for Each Search Option” document, what is the
fewest number of searchers you can hire?

Search Option 2: Two-Person Teams on the Ground

20. Given the conditions described on the “Costs for Each Search Option” document, what is the
fewest number of regions you can subdivide the zoo into for this option?

21. To the nearest whole square foot, how big is each region?

Search Option 3: From the Air by Helicopter

22. How much is the coverage fee for the zoo given the area you calculated?

You can now create your presentation. Make sure that the smallest area of the zoo you found for
#14 -17, as well as the answers you found for #19 – 22, make it into your presentation.

You have now completed the worksheet. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on it.
