1.0 OBJECTIVES

This experiment is designed to expose students with the use of Impact Testing
instrument to measure impact strength of polymer materials as per ISO 179-1
Plastics – Determination of Charpy impact properties – Part 1: Non-instrumented
impact test

2.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this laboratory session, student should be able to:-

a) Perform Charpy Impact Testing according to ISO 179-1 Plastics -

Determination of Charpy impact properties - Part 1: Non-instrumented
impact test
b) Interpret the result and discuss the result accordingly

3.0 THEORY
The Charpy impact test, also known as the Charpy V-notch test, is a
standardized high strain-rate test which determines the amount of energy
absorbed by a material during fracture. This absorbed energy is a measure of a
given material's notch toughness and acts as a tool to study temperature-
dependent ductile-brittle transition. It is widely applied in industry, since it is easy
to prepare and conduct and results can be obtained quickly and cheaply. A
disadvantage is that some results are only comparative.
The apparatus shown in Figure 1 consists of a pendulum of known mass
and length that is dropped from a known height to impact a notched specimen of
material. The energy transferred to the material can be inferred by comparing the
difference in the height of the hammer before and after the fracture (energy
absorbed by the fracture event).
The notch in the sample affects the results of the impact test, thus it is
necessary for the notch to be of regular dimensions and geometry. The size of the
sample can also affect results, since the dimensions determine whether or not the
material is in plane strain. This difference can greatly affect conclusions made.

5.0 PROCEDURES
A. Polymer test specimen preparation
1. Cut the specimen according to MS ISO 179-1. Refer to the standard for
the right dimension
2. Place sample on the notch cutting machine
3. Turn on the notch cutting machine and prepare a notch for the
specimen
4. Mark your final dimensions in Table 1

B. Impact testing of polymer specimen

1. Turn on the impact testing machine
2. Turn on the PC and open the impact software
3. Ensure the hammer is not static and not moving
4. Zero the energy
5. Start the impact test
6. Record the impact reading
7. Repeat for 1 more impact test
8. Shutdown the impact testing machine after completion
