The Liturgical Year

• Two types of time:

-Chronos (the time we measure) and Kairos (Lord’s time)

• The Liturgical year or Church calendar helps us celebrate the life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus.
• The Paschal mystery is celebrated through specific seasons:
Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Paschal Triduum, and Easter.

• The year or cycle begins with Advent and ends with Ordinary Time.
• Liturgy has everything to do with the way people worship in public.
• Greek = leitourgia = “public service”
• In the Church language, liturgy is the public worship given to God.

• Each season in the Liturgical calendar has a particular theme, a particular liturgical color,
and different religious practices, and symbols.

1. Advent - 4 weeks of preparation before the celebration of Jesus' birth.

 four weeks before Christmas beginning on November 30 or the nearest
Sunday to it
 the Church's New Year's Day
 comes from the Latin 'adventus‘ or ‘ad-venire’ which means 'arrival' or
'coming’
 equivalent Greek word of Advent = Parousia = second coming

The Advent wreath consists of evergreen branches

• The evergreen branches symbolize God’s faithfulness. It also indicate HOPE just as
the green of spring indicates new life.
• The wreath circle symbolizes God’s unending love.

• It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to
Bethlehem.
The third candle represents ‘Joy’ and also called “shepherd’s candle”.
The fourth candle symbolizes ‘love’
• This final candle, the “angel’s candle”.

“Cristesmesse” meaning “The Mass of Christ”.

mixed into the oil that was used to anoint prophets for the divinely appointed
work of revealing God and communicating His will and words to His people.
3. Ordinary Time -
 Occurs twice during the year:
