COMP1773 User Interface Contribution

Design 100% of module

Module Leader Faculty of Engineering Deadline Date:
Dr Nuno Otero Coursework and Science 5th/12/2024
This coursework should take an average student who is up-to-date with tutorial work
approximately 50 hours.

Feedback and grades are normally made available within 15 working days of the
coursework deadline.

AI risk measure scale: 2) low risk – the assignments have clear guidelines, although
AI tools can assist, the student's approach or solution is what is being evaluated as
the main focus of the assignment.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this module students will be able to:
1. identify and discuss the issues, principles and practices involved in
developing and evaluating interfaces for interactive applications;
2. demonstrate an awareness of human-computer interface standards and
guidelines;
3. select and apply appropriate principles, concepts and models within a user-
centred design process for the development and evaluation of interactive
system interfaces;
4. propose and design solutions that are suitable to different users and contexts.

Plagiarism policy
Plagiarism is presenting somebody else's work as your own. It includes: copying
information directly from the Web or books without referencing the material;
submitting joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student's
coursework; stealing coursework from another student and submitting it as your own
work. Suspected plagiarism will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be
dealt with according to the procedures set down by the University. Please see
https://docs.gre.ac.uk/rep/sas/academic-misconduct-policy-and-procedure-taught-
awards for further details of what is / isn't plagiarism.

All material copied or amended from any source (e.g. internet, books) must be
referenced correctly according to the reference style you are using.

Your work will be submitted for electronic plagiarism checking. Any attempt to
bypass our plagiarism detection systems will be treated as a severe
Assessment Offence.

Coursework Submission Requirements
 An electronic copy of your final work for this coursework must be fully uploaded by ... on the
Deadline Date using ...
 For this coursework, there is an opportunity for interim feedback in the labs of your work.
This interim feedback is optional, but will enable you to get feedback, which should help you
to get a better grade.
 For this final coursework, you must submit a single Acrobat PDF document.
In general, any text in the document must not be an image (i.e. must not be scanned) and
would normally be generated from other documents (e.g. MS Office using "Save As... PDF").
More details can be found on the IT Support pages. An exception to this is hand written
mathematical notation, but when scanning do ensure the file size is not excessive.
 For this final coursework, you must also upload your mid-fidelity prototype.
 There are limits on the file size.
 Make sure that any files you upload are virus-free and not protected by a password or
corrupted otherwise they will be treated as null submissions.
 Your work will be marked online and comments on your work and a provisional grade will be
available.
 All courseworks must be submitted as above. Under no circumstances can they be accepted
by academic staff.

Detailed Specification – This is an individual piece of work

For this coursework, you are to design a User Interface that would demonstrate understanding and
application of all considerations discussed throughout the User Interface Design lectures and
tutorials, as per below:

The University of Greenwich is engaged in discussing and investigating about ways to

support sustainability. Within this context, you and your colleagues have been challenged
to design an application that supports people reducing their consumption and inefficient
daily practices that lead to waste. Three different areas are being targeted: reducing
energy consumption at home or at work, reducing water consumption at home or at work,
and reducing food waste at home. You will need to choose one of these three areas for
your project.
More specifically, your task is to design a mid-fidelity prototype for use on a mobile phone
and design a set of functionalities that can help people achieve these goals. Feel free to
come up with any functionalities that you see fit for this purpose.
On a practical level, make sure it is clear in your designs how the user navigates between
the various screens. You must sketch/design an interface design and justify why your
proposed solution goes in the right direction. Furthermore, you need to create and plan
an evaluation framework that would allow you to assess to what extent your assumptions
were correct.
The final digital prototype should demonstrate the proposed mobile experience with the
aim of providing ‘proof of concept’. This prototype should be an interactive prototype
demonstrating as a minimum the interactions for the scenarios identified and described in
the report. Please note that it is the application of the User Interface Design theory that is
most important in this coursework.

2
Deliverables
 1) A Final Report:
This report should be around 2500 words, it should be presented in a professional
structure and it should be underpinned by credible references in the Harvard style.
The report should include:

 Professional written communication and referencing a report of professional

standard and formatting, professional writing style and English proficiency,
and use of appropriate referencing in Harvard Style of relevant sources for the
coursework. (5%)

 Background which should consist of: (A) a discussion of relevant

considerations in user interface design, and (B) a review of relevant sets of
guidelines and standards. You must discuss what of the above will be
incorporated into the design of your mid-fidelity prototype. (15%)

 User groups a justified identification of the user group(s) and two appropriate
user personas and two scenarios relevant to the design of your mid-fidelity
prototype. (15%)

 Visual Design A selection and justification of the application of colour theory,

font terminology, layout design and the graphic design elements in the design
of your prototype. (10%)

 Evaluation Discussion and justification of relevant evaluation techniques,

especially taking into consideration the design cycle. In other words, you need
to show how would you create and plan for your evaluation framework. (15%)

 Critical Reflection which should critically reflect on your own personal

experience of investigating and designing a user interface for a product.
Discuss what you have learned, how the report/prototype could be improved,
and how you think you will apply this in practice. This must not be a summary of
the report. (10%)

 2) A mid-fidelity prototype:
Submit your prototype AND your report as a pdf (two separate files). The prototype
needs to be agreed with the module leader. You need to submit the original file.
 Design process and mid-fidelity prototype Evidence of the design process and
clear linkage between the points discussed in the report and the prototype
should be demonstrated, which will provide evidence of effective User
Interface Design. The prototype should be annotated in the report (with
screenshots) to explicitly demonstrate this linkage. (30%)
