Assignment #2 (30 pts)

Form a group of 5 and carryout the assignments clearly and neatly. G-1 stands for group
one and the like.
Submission date: 02/09/2016 E.C
1. Make a review of the development of different types of truss structures. Describe the load transfer
among the members as clearly as possible. (25 pts)
a. Develop a model of a hall (building) with Roof Truss (G-1). Consider the floor area of the
building as 15m by 50m
b. Develop a model of truss bridge (G-2). Consider the span of the bridge 150m.
c. Develop a model of a factory building with space truss (G-3). Take the area of the workshop as
30m by 80m.
d. Develop a model of market area entrance lobby (canopy truss) (G-4). Take the area as 5m by
10m and is a cantilever to the 5m length.
2. Draw the shear force a bending moment diagram for the simply supported beam loaded as shown
below. (5 pts)
Problem 5.10: Draw the SF and BM diagrams for
a beam as shown in Figure 14a.
Solution: The calculations for determining the
reactions and ordinates of the SF and BM diagrams
are shown as follows:
∑ 𝐹𝑥 = 0 ⟹ 𝐴𝑥 = 0 ;

∑ 𝑀𝐴 = 0 ⟹ (−1 × 12 + 4𝐶𝑦 − 5 × 8) = 0 ⟹
𝐶𝑦 = 13 𝑘𝑁 Upward

∑ 𝑀𝐶 = 0 ⟹ {−4𝐴𝑦 + 3 × 12 − 1 × 8} = 0 ⟹
𝐴𝑦 = 7 𝑘𝑁 Upward

(Check: ∑ 𝐹𝑦 = 7 − 12 + 13 − 8 = 0; 𝑂𝐾)

Now consider a section-X at a distance 𝑥 from the

roller support A, and if 𝑉𝐿 and 𝑀𝐿 be the SF and BM just to the left of the section then by
considering the equilibrium of the left portion AX of the beam, we have:
For 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1, ∑ 𝐹𝐿𝑦 ↑ += 7 + 𝑉𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑉𝐿 = −7 𝑘𝑁 (𝑂𝑆𝐹 ↑ )

∑ 𝑀𝐿𝑋 += −7𝑥 + 𝑀𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑀𝐿 = 7𝑥 (𝑂𝐵𝑀 ↑) , 𝑀𝐿 will be zero if
7𝑥 = 0 Or 𝑥 = 0 and thus maximum SF = 7kN
For 1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 4, ∑ 𝐹𝐿𝑦 ↑ += 7 − 12 + 𝑉𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑉𝐿 = 5 𝑘𝑁 (𝑂𝑆𝐹 ↓)

∑ 𝑀𝐿𝑋 += −7𝑥 + 12(𝑥 − 1) + 𝑀𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑀𝐿 = −5𝑥 + 12 , 𝑀𝐿 will be
zero if (−5𝑥 + 12) = 0 Or 𝑥 = 2.40𝑚 (𝑂𝐵𝑀 ↑→↓) and thus maximum
SF = 5kN
For 4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5, ∑ 𝐹𝐿𝑦 ↑ += 7 − 12 + 13 + 𝑉𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑉𝐿 = −8 𝑘𝑁 (𝑂𝑆𝐹 ↑ )

∑ 𝑀𝐿𝑋 += −7𝑥 + 12(𝑥 − 1) − 13(𝑥 − 4) + 𝑀𝐿 = 0 ⟹ 𝑀𝐿 = −8𝑥 +
40 , 𝑀𝐿 will be zero if (−8𝑥 + 40) = 0 Or 𝑥 = 5𝑚 (𝑂𝐵𝑀 ↓) and thus
maximum SF 8 𝑘𝑁
Thus using these equations , we determines the values of SF and BM at the important sections
of a beam, and then using a suitable scale we plot the SF and BM diagrams , the obtained
diagrams are shown in the Figure 14b and 14c
