Combining Like Terms Notes
Algebraic Expressions: a symbol or a combination of symbols used in Algebra, containing one or more numbers,
variables, and arithmetic operations

Like Terms
Before any algebraic expression or equation can be solved, the expression or equation must be simplified.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
To COMBINE LIKE TERMS, we add together items that are the same to make a simplified shorter list of items.
Consider the following family fast food order: Using - for burger, . for fries, and / for drink, write an algebraic
expression that represents the total order.
That’s a lot to write out! Imagine if we needed to start solving for one of the variables!
1st: Draw a box around the first term and then draw boxes around every term that matches.
2nd: Combine those like terms and write the new term down below.
3rd: Cross out the terms in the original expression that you already combined.
Repeat this process until ALL of the original expression terms have been combined and/or written below.
When you have simplified the expression as far as it will go, BOX the answer so that it is easily identified!
5 − 3 − 1 + 23 − 63# + 3# 4? − ? + @? + 1 + 1 + 2?
