Answer ALL the questions
PART- A (10 X 2 = 20 Marks)
1. Explain Grubler’s equation.
2. Define inversion of kinematic chain.
3. What are the requirements of high speed CAM?
4. State the functional difference between clutch and brake.
5. Classify CAMs according to the surface in contact.
6. What do you understand by interchageable gears?
7. What are the difference between static balancing and dynamic balancing?
8. What are the fundamentals of law of gearing?
9. Define damped vibration.
10. What is meant by degrees of freedom?

PART –B (5 X 16 = 80 Marks)
11, a). With suitable diagrams, explain about Whitworth quick return mechanism and Rotary engine of a
single slider crank mechanism?
(OR)
11. b). Explain about Ratchets and escapements mechanisms with suitable sketches?

12. a). A bolt with a square threaded screw has mean diameter of 25 mm and a pitch of 3 mm. It carries
an axial thrust of 10 KN on the bolt head of 25 mm mean radius. If µ = 0.12, find the force
required at the end of a spanner 450 mm long in tightening up the bolt.
(OR)
12. b). (i)A single plate friction clutch, with both sides of the plate being effective is used to transmit
power at 1440 r.p.m. It has outer and inner radii 80 mm and 60 mm respectively. The
maximum intensity of pressure is limited to 10 ×10 4 N / m2. If µ = 0.3, determine, (a) Total
pressure exerted on the plate and (b) Power transmitted. (8)
(ii) A pulley is driven by a flat belt running at a speed of 600 m/min. If µ = 0.3, and angle of lap is
160°. If the maximum tension in the belt is 700 N. Find the power transmitted by a belt. (8)

13. a). A cam operating knife edged follower has the following data:
(a) Follower moves outwards through 40 mm during 60° of cam rotation.
(b) Follower dwells for the next 45°
(c) Follower returns to its original position during next 90° .
(d) Follower dwells for the rest of the rotation.
The displacement of the follower is to take place with uniform velocity during the both
outward and return strokes. The least radius of the cam is 50 mm. Draw the profile of the
cam when the axis of the follower passes through the cam axis.
OR
13. b. . In an epicyclic gear train, an arm carries two gears A and B having 42 and 58 teeth
respectively. If the arm rotates at 215 r.p.m. in the anti clockwise direction about the centre of
the gear A which is fixed, what will be the speed of the gear B. If the gear A instead of being
fixed makes 365 r.p.m. in the clockwise direction, what will be the speed of the gear B.

14. a) Explain primary balancing. Bring out differences between primary and secondary balancing.
(OR)
14. b) (i)Explain in brief the logarithmic decrement. (04)
(ii) A machine of 1kg mass is to be supported on a spring having stiffness 5 kN/m. The damping
co-efficient is 3 N s/m. Determine. (a) the natural frequency of the system, (b) logarithmic
decrement (12)

15. a) write short notes on i) vibration isolation, ii) vibration absorption,

(OR)
15. b) A shaft carries three mass are A, B, C of magnitude 200 kg, 300 kg and 400 kg, respectively and
the corresponding radius of rotation are 80 mm, 70 mm and 80 mm in planes measured from A
at 300 mm and 700 mm. The angles between the cranks measured anticlockwise are A to B 45°,
B to C 70°. The balancing masses are to be placed in planes X &Y. The distance between the
planes A and X is 200 mm, Between X and y is 300 mm. If the balancing masses revolve at a
radius of 200 mm Find their magnitudes and angular positions, Find the position and the
magnitude of balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.2 m. Solve the problem
analytically and graphically.
