A blind man sees again!
When Larry Hester was a young man, he started to have a problem with his eyes. He
went to see many doctors. The doctors told him that he had a serious eye disease. The part of
his eyes that sees light, the retina, was very weak. The doctors could not help Larry. His retina
slowly became weaker. Eventually, Larry became blind. Although he lived in darkness for a
very long time, Larry's life didn't stop. He used his memory to help him get around at home
and at work, but it was not easy. Now, after 30 years, Larry can see again. How did this
happen?
One day, Jenny, Larry's wife, read a story about a new device that might help her
husband. Researchers at the Duke Eye Center in North Carolina developed a bionic, or robotic,
eye. This device is a replacement for the retina, the part of the eye that responds to light. The
weakness of the retina in Larry's eyes caused his blindness. The Hesters met with Dr. Paul
Hahn, an eye surgeon from the Duke Eye Center.
He believed that he could help Larry. Dr. Hahn placed one of these devices in each of
Larry's eyes. Then Dr. Hahn gave Larry a special pair of glasses. The glasses are connected to
the device. At that moment, Larry saw light for the first time in 30 years. Larry took a deep
breath. He was unable to describe his feelings, but he was very excited.

Larry is not the first person to receive this special device. There are other people who
are blind for the same reason as Larry. But even with the device, these people cannot see
objects clearly. The bionic eye is very simple. Larry's special glasses contain a tiny camera.
The bionic eye picks up light signals from the camera. Larry, and others who have the same
device, can only see light and shapes. However, this is amazing to people who could only see
darkness. Perhaps in the future the technology will improve even more. Then people like Larry
will be able to see much more. For Larry and other people like him, that will truly be an
amazing day.
21. __________ As a baby, Larry Hester had problem with his eyes .
22. __________ The retina is the part of the eye that sees light.
23. __________ Larry Hester found it easy to walk around at home.
24. __________ Larry went to Dr. Paul Hahn’s office alone.
25. __________ Many person had used the special device before.
26. __________ The bionic eye can only help people see light and shapes.

Types of Twins
People are fascinated by twins, and thanks in large part to advances in fertility science, there
are more twins than almost any other time in history. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2017, 33 out of every 1,000 births in the United States were twins.
Identical and fraternal twins are the most common, but there are also several other rare types.
Read on to learn more about twins.
Identical twins
Identical twins are also called monozygotic twins, meaning one fertilized egg. They occur
when one egg is fertilized by one sperm as usual, but the egg splits in two shortly afterward. Each half
then grows into a baby.
Because they originally came from the same egg and sperm, 100 percent of their chromosomes
are identical. This means they’re the same sex and have the same genetic characteristics, like hair and
eye color.
However, things in their environment, such as how much room they each had in the womb, can
cause slight differences in their appearance
Fraternal twins

The other name for fraternal twins is dizygotic twins, meaning two fertilized eggs. They’re the
result of the mother releasing two eggs at the same time with each egg being fertilized by a different
sperm.
Because they come from different eggs and sperm, they only share about 50 percent of their
chromosomes like any other siblings. This means they can be the same or different sexes and aren’t
identical.
Is there a third type?
There may be a third type called polar body or half-identical twins. Some doctors suggest this
would explain why some fraternal twins look identical, but it’s never been proven that this type exists.
When an egg is released, it can split in two. The smaller of the two halves is called a polar
body. It has everything it needs to grow into a baby if it’s fertilized. However, there’s very little fluid
(cytoplasm) inside it, so it’s usually too small to survive.
If a polar body survives, it could be fertilized by one sperm when the larger half of the egg is
fertilized by another. The result would be polar twins.
Because they come from a single egg, the chromosomes from their mother are identical. They
share no chromosomes from their father. They may or may not be the same sex.

27. _________ In 2007, there were 33 twins for every 1000 births worldwide.

28. _________ Identical twins often occur when one egg is fertilized by two sperms.

29. _________ Slight differences in identical twins’ appearance may be caused by the environment.

30. _________ Fraternal twins occur when the mother releases two eggs at the same time with
each egg being fertilized by a different sperm.

31. _________ In polar twins, the egg is devided in two parts.

32. _________ Half-identical twins are always the same sex.
