Think
Do people tend to focus on the positive (optimists) or the negative
(pessimists)?
Feel
For example...
Do people tend to be happy or unhappy?
Do they experience intense emotions or not?
Do they get angry easily?
Are they especially sensitive to rejection?
Behave
For example...
Do they tend to talk a lot?
Do they usually go along with what other people want or insist on
doing things their way?
Are they neat and tidy or sloppy and disorderly?
Do they like to try new things, or do they always order the same
thing when they go out to eat?
Reliable
Valid
The hope is that because of the ambiguous nature of the questions, people
might be less able to rely on possible hints about what they think the
tester expects to see. As a result, the hope is that they are less tempted to
provide fake answers to make themselves look good, as a result.
The most famous projective test is the Rorschach Inkblot test, in which
respondents are asked to look at ambiguous inkblot images and then
describe what they see. The test is frequently shown as a way of revealing
a person’s unconscious thoughts, motives, or desires.
This test is not considered very reliable because the respondents can fake
their results, especially in retests. Also, they may or may not be given the
same images.
