First of all, stick to the Syllabus, limit your Resources

Ancient History - 6, 11 class NCERT should be finished

in 3 days.

Modern India class 12th NCERT + Spectrum in 7 days.

Indian Society 11,12 NCERT in 5 days.

Indian Polity 6–12th class NCERT +

M. Laxmikant in 30 days

Indian Economy 9–12th NCERT +

Ramesh Singh in 30 days.

Geography 6–12th NCERT + G.C Leong + Map Work in

30 days.

Post Independence Class 12th NCERT in 3 days.

World History 9,10th NCERT selected chapters + 12th

NCERT in 10 days.

Ethics in 15 days

Art and Culture 11th class NCERT +

Nitin Singhania in 10 days.

If you dedicate 10–12 hours daily you will able to

prepare the above books thoroughly in approx 4.5
months of time and Timely Revision is must.

Science and Technology, IR, Security Issues,

Environment and Ecology questions are related to
Current Affairs so read any Current Affair monthly
magazine covering most of the News comprehensively.

You should dedicate 2 hours daily for reading The

Hindu along with making Short Notes.

Political Science : Laxmikant Indan polity.

Economics: Economic Lectures by Mrunal available on

youtube channel.

History: Modern India Spectrum or Tamilnadu State

board book for 11th & 12th.

Geography: NCERT class VI to XII.

Predicting a certain time is not easy until you plan for

something. You can plan and strategize for something
in a certain way with some aid. These things depend on
person to person. General studies in UPSC CSE is a
vast section and there are a lot of things to cover in
various subjects. 4 papers of General studies demand
time as these papers also demand some analytical skills
with some better retention power to grasp the
concepts. I can’t tell you about a specific time as this
will not be a truthful suggestion but I can tell you to
follow some strategies which you can follow to excel in
the exam:

Knowing about the structure and nature of GS.

Creating a link between the syllabus.

Search for the right books and materials.

Build some good habits.

Plan and strategize.

The UPSC Mains exam is very important and

candidates who clear the Prelims Exam need to put
some extra effort to crack it. The mains exam has 8
papers, out of which 4 papers are of General studies.
General studies paper demands extensive research on
your previous knowledge. Prelims demand an objective
approach while Mains and its GS papers demand a
subjective approach that needs elaboration of answers
by using facts, dates, and figures. Here are the Mains
topics asked in various GS papers.

GS-1- Indian Heritage and Culture, History and

Geography of the world and Society.

GS-2- Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social

Justice, and International Relations.

GS-3- Tech, Economic Development,

Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and
Disaster management.

GS-4- Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.

CREATING A LINK BETWEEN THE SYLLABUS

The syllabus of UPSC CSE is as vast as the sea but one

thing you can do is to create a link between common
topics which you need to study both for Prelims and
Mains. The books you read in Prelims for your basic
understanding of the concept, facts, figures, or the
dates are also useful in your Mains examination. Try to
figure out the common topics. You can easily use facts
and figures of Prelims in your Mains examination.

READ NEWSPAPERS, PERIODICALS, AND

MAGAZINES

Reading Newspapers and periodicals is not only a good

habit but these things will surely help you in the long
run as these will create the base for your current affairs
section. Current affairs are an important part of UPSC
CSE which has a good weightage in all three levels of
the exam. Being an Administrator it is mandatory to stay
connected with all the happenings of the day to day life.
Everything and every section in the UPSC CSE exam is
connected to current affairs.

PLAN AND STRATEGIZE

After all of these things, the most important thing is to

plan out something. Planning something is more
important in a field like UPSC. Sorting out a huge
syllabus is in itself a daunting task for an aspirant.
Therefore, sorting and planning will give you a clear
path to crack this complex yet interesting examination.

Examarly app works on the same principle, if you are

facing issues with making plans for yourself you can
use the Examarly app to help make your plan according
to your weak areas and areas you should focus on. In
Examarly’s personalized planning initiative you’ll get
daily targets and chapter-based tests to be sufficiently
prepared for each and every chapter.

It depends from individual to individual but if you are

starting it for the first time, it will take atleast 4 months
to complete the GS syllabus once. But for this you need
to have all your study material sorted out, preparation
strategy ready and daily sitting of atleast 10 hours of
net study, with a fairly good intelligence and memory
retention power. Also you will have no choice but to rely
on current affair manuals or website for current affairs
preparations which are generally not as comprehensive
as the newspaper. Ideally one should start preparing
about one year before appearing in prelims, with daily
average of not less than five hours. Besides reading
newspaper and following standard NCERT text books,
you can follow UpscMentor for one of the best study
materials for civil services examination. Right now
content is available for current affairs and Indian
Economy only. Content for other sections will be
available soon.

I hope it helps.

Thanks for A2A.

Good that you are done with optional.

Now GS requires strategy. While pre GS is extensive

and a little analytical Mains is intensive as well.

After building suitable links in the syllabus I believe 6

months should suffice all including paper solving.

It depend on your speed as well.

Be regular and consistent.

All the best.

How should I start my preparation for the IAS

exam?
IAS, the name is enough. The most want to get
government job in India. Even after completing a
professional degree courses, like Doctor, Engineer,
Lawyer, most of them give a halt to their journey at
Mukherjee Nagar Delhi.

Source: dnaindia

Some of the aspirants like me imprison themselves in

their rooms and give a start to this wonderful journey of
becoming an IAS/IPS/IFS Officer.

Source: Quora

Before starting how to start, let us see How not to

start? Or, What are the mistakes one should not
have to commit?

So in start itself we see how, mmmm… let me call them

“not fool” but over enthusiast beginner start their
journey.

Now, nearly every over-enthusiased beginner

aspirant journey starts something like that.

Making list of sources- These overenthusiast

beginners take this task as Mission Impossible,
I can't miss a single source of information
otherwise I will gonna loose my mission. And
by the way, Why not they do so? They are
fresh graduates, full of energy and josh, nearly
zero pressure of family & have courage to
achieve anything, but sadly this part
slowly turns into one of their hobbies & most
of them spend their 2–3 years in this search
itself . Yes it's true. This is one of the
biggest mistake overenthusiast beginners do.

Source or Books collection- As mentioned in

the last point,the Mission Impossible, I can't
miss a single source of information, & these
beginners end up as book collectors only
and not as “District collector” something
they are supposed to be.

Source: Medium

Misguide themselves- Even after watching lot

of topper videos, reading blogs, a more than
required google searching on what to read
what to avoid, beginners think (as the freshers
tag is attached with them, means no pressure
of time) that it might be possible that topper
is not smart enough to read the other
sources which I had discovered, but I am is
the smarter one & can easily manage to study
all these sources too to ensure my selection,
and that idea of there make it sure that they
will never gonna pass this exam. REASON-
Time is limited.

Day dreams- Day dreams are obvious in

nature, because as of now, they are some
young guy/girl who just completed their under-
graduation, and after passing the IAS exam
you will be like 'A King and that too in a
Democracy’. So they let themselves to fall in
these dreams, as dreams always give the same
feeling infact more what you could supposed
to get in real life, and that too without hard
work. And then, winter comes and winter gone
than again winter comes, but they are still in
their never ending dream.

Source: our kids magazine

Avoid Newspaper reading- Although all of

them read about the importance of reading
newspaper, but somehow they manage to not
read that vital important source for their exam.
The biggest mistake.

Source: neiman lab

Over reading of Newspaper- Some of them

do opposite and waste like 3–5 hours of day
in newspaper reading only. Yes, it’s funny or
not you will decide but some of them do this
too.

Multiple Newspaper- Some of them even

become newspaper collector too. I know
various newspaper cover different important
article which are not published in the
newspaper you are reading, but that is the
beauty of the newspaper, that some news
which is not published today might get publish
in any of the upcoming print of your
newspaper.

So is it bad to making list of sources, purchasing books,

listening or reading about toppers strategies, NO IT'S
NOT WRONG. See, you have to be very clearly
understand one point that at the end of the war what
matter for a warrior is the victory and if you want
philosophy and don't want to pass this exam, I can also
tell you, victory or defeat does not matter, all what
matter is your journey or how much
knowledge/experience you achieve in this journey.
Although I call it philosophy in sarcasm but it's true
too, but the point is we are here to understand how to
crack this exam, not to become an obsessive lover of
this exam.

So now let's see, smart beginners/achievers starting

journey.

Optimum utilisation of time- You must listen

this somewhere in your life that “Time is
precious don't waste it”. Nowadays, it will not
take more than 1–3 days, to find what are the
sources I need to follow to clear the UPSC CSE
Exam. So, once they find the right guidance,
they never let them indulged in any kind of non
productive and time loosing activity.

Source: yourquote

They purchase only the books, which are

inevitable and suggested by toppers, on
online blogs or Youtube channels, as they are
inevitable for exam preparation. I will
mention those sources below.

They are dreaming too, but they dream only to

turn their dream into reality. They do hard work
to make to turn their dream into reality.

Source: Pinterest

They smartly read the newspaper and not

spent more than 1 hour, unless there are
highly important articles comes in a single day
newspaper only, like after Budget day or some
important schemes announced by the
government etc. Also, you can read or add
one more newspaper only after prelims, if
you feel so.

Test Series - It’s something which is for sure

either missing or not taken seriously by Not So
Serious Candidates. But achievers, not only
join the test series, but give tests on time and
most important take analysis of their test
and knowledge by reading the solution
provided by the institute.

So as we see what is the difference between the

approach of smart and over-enthusiased beginners. Let
us see what could be the possible strategic points
of smart beginners, but before that let us look at the
vital sources which are inevitable for this exam.

Let's look at them subject wise:

1. Environment - NCERT Class 12th Biology (unit

on environment). Shankar IAS latest edition.

2. Polity- NCERT 6–12th, M Laxmikant Indian

Polity, that's it.

3. Economics - NCERT 11 & 12th. Business page

of newspaper you are reading, here the task is
to search every economics terminology you
came across, latest Economic Survey.

4. Ancient India- Old NCERT by RS Sharma

(Oxford publication).

5. Medical India- Old NCERT by Satish Chandra,

you can purchase this online.

6. Modern India- Spectrum A brief history of

Modern India by Rajiv Ahir.

7. Culture- Nitin singhania or NIOS material,

CCRT website.

8. Science - NCERT 6–10th

9. Geography- NCERT 6–12th only, optional GC

Leong Certificate of Physical Geography. If you
don’t have much time for your prelims, you can
stick to 11th NCERT only for geography. Trust
me it works.

10. Current Affairs- Free PDF of Any coaching

institute you trust.

11. CSAT- Solve past 5 year papers, as it is only

qualifying in nature, and you need to score
only 33%. Please focus a little bit more on
Quant/Maths, as in from last 2–3 years there
are good amount of questions from this
section.

12. Test series- Again any coaching institute you

trust.

13. Newspaper- Indian Express or The Hindu.

Well that's it, trust me if you diligently cover these

sources only, you can easily sail through the prelims
exam, and have a good command on atleast 60–70
percent of mains syllabus too. I can add lots of other
books name too, but it's impractical as cost is more
and benefit is less

Now, let us see some strategic points on How to start?

First you need to read only not to solve

previous 5 year paper's at least 3–5 times.
This is inevitable and highly important step,
as it will give you the idea what exactly need to
read from the sources mentioned above.

Now when you start, never underline before

3 readings of the same book. Yes otherwise,
you will end up with underlining the 3/4 part of
book, and it will ruin your revisions. But after
3 readings you very well know the 3/4 part and
than you underline only the rest part, and you
can easily manage to revise in the last
moment. Note- This rule especially applied
for Laxmikant-Polity.

Consistency is the most important part.

Start with like 3–5 hours for, let's say 10 days,
then 4–6 hours for another 15 days, than trust
me, you don't need any thrust, and it will be
hard for someone to take you on movie or
doing chitchat. In the start you could adjust
number of hours as per your convenience.
Yes, I have to write this word
“CONSISTENCY” n number of times, as
nothing matters if you don’t have this in
your preparation. Or, I have to say, it is
guaranteed, that you can clear this exam, if
you are consistent and if you are not than
vice versa is also guaranteed.
Source: steemit

Never ever miss a single day newspaper.

Without that you are like non updated software
of your computer, who can run program but at
the cost of lack of efficiency and negligible
productivity.

Limit yourself to like 200 words when you are

making notes from newspapers, as you will
definitely gonna read CA magazines, and trust
me your notes will never gonna match their
content. So avoid the extra material as much
as you can.

Stop waste time on day dreaming or

watching toppers videos etc. Once you get
acquaint yourself what are the resources, how
to start, than these videos, blogs are only a
way to loose your precious time.

Answer writing practice for mains- Always

start answer writing, once you finished a
topic from sources mentioned above atleast
twice. Otherwise, you will never gonna able to
give diversity on issues required in your
answer. Also, you may get a feeling that you
are not the UPSC guy. So, it is suggested to
start answer writing once you are comfortable
with the prelims syllabus first which means
minimum 2 readings of entire syllabus and
reading newspaper/CA magazines from atleast
last 4 months.

Source: Byju's

I can write exactly as much matter as written above, but

it's worthless. Also I didn't write much on Mains as the
matter mentioned above cover 75% of mains exam
syllabus, & also this question was on how to start.

I think I give you the idea, now it's up to you readers,

how you utilize this information.

Best of luck!!!

daily should be for revision alone ( it seems like a waste
