INTRODUCTION
One of the goals of environmental science is to know how nature works.
How exactly nature work? What is keeping us and other organisms alive? What
sustains life on earth? in this module, we are going to learn how nature works.
WHAT TO KNOW
According to scientific studies, the earth has a life support system that is
divided into four spherical systems that interact with one another. These are the
atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), geosphere (rock, soil, and sediments),
and the biosphere. Aside from these, there are factors that life is dependent on
these factors are (1) the one-way flow of quality energy, (2) the cycling of
nutrients, and gravity. How do these four main spherical systems become a life-
support system? And why is life dependent on these three factors?
WHAT TO DO (PROCEDURES)
Directions: Watch the video and answer the questions below.
PART A:
Guide Questions:
1. How did the earth’s system describe in the video? What are their
functions?

PART B:
Guide Questions:
2. Based on the video, what is the role of gravity in sustaining life on earth?
4. Explain why (a) the flow of energy through the biosphere depends on the
cycling of nutrients? (b) the cycling of nutrients depends on gravity.

ACTIVITY 2 TIMEFRAME: 20 MINUTES
WHAT TO KNOW
Ecology is a key component of environmental science. It is the science that
focuses on how organisms interact with one another and with their nonliving
environment of matter and energy. Its major focus is the study of the ecosystem.
Ecosystems are a set of organisms within the defined area or volume interacting
with one another and their nonliving environment of matter and energy.
Ecologists have classified matters into levels of organization, identified the
components of ecosystems, and assign every organism according to their
feeding level or called “trophic level”. In this module, we will be going to learn
what are the major components of an ecosystem.
WHAT TO DO (PROCEDURES)
PART A: Directions: Arrange the words in ascending order in terms of their using a
flow chart and distinguish them from each other. Answer this using the box below.
Keywords: population, levels of organization, food chain, food web, atmosphere, biosphere, 6
energy, geosphere, trophic levels
PART B. Directions: Analyze the picture and identify the components of an
ecosystem.
Guide Questions:
1. what can you found in an ecosystem using the picture above?

energy, geosphere, trophic levels
ACTIVITY 3 TIMEFRAME: 20 MINUTES
WHAT TO KNOW
The chemical energy stored is stored as nutrients in the bodies and wastes
of an organism which flows through ecosystems from tropic level to another. This
chemical energy is stored in biomass which is all the dry weight of all organic
matter contained in organisms. In the transfer of energy, it is greatly represented
by food chains and food webs. In this chapter, we will describe what happens to
the energy in an ecosystem? And what scientific law that governs it.
WHAT TO DO (PROCEDURES)
PART A. Directions: Using the picture below, identify which is a food chain
and answer the questions below.

3. What would happen if one of the organisms in the food web went missing
or gone?
4. What happens to the energy as you go along the food chain or the food
web? Illustrate your answer.

energy, geosphere, trophic levels
ACTIVITY 4 TIMEFRAME: 15 MINUTES
WHAT TO KNOW
All the matter such as elements and compounds that create up the
nutrients move continually through the air, water, soil, rock, and living
organisms within the ecosystems in a circular motion, it is called
Biogeochemical Cycles. In this module, we are going to identify and discuss
each cycle.
