Session 2: Data Visualizer

Session Objectives

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

1. Use data visualizer tool
2. Select dimensions for creating Data Visualizer
3. Use the options menu functionality to format the Data Visualizer
4. Use the update, file and download functionalities
5. Interpret the Data Visualizer Outputs for decision making
Reflection

Have you heard of Data Visualizer in KHIS? Take a

moment to reflect on what you think a data visualizer
is
Data Visualizer

• It’s a tool that enables a user to easily perform dynamic data analysis and visualization
through charts and data tables
• The data visualizer app helps the user make informed decisions using user defined charts
• The data visualizer app can help you add the charts on a dashboard
• It assists in generating user-defined reports
• It helps compare user-defined and preferred variables
• It gives wider comparison across dimensions
Data Visualizer…

There are a number of data visualizers in KHIS. It is important to apply the right visualizer for
the right data. Data visualizers can be any of the following;
1. Bar chart
2. Pie chart
3. Line graph
4. Pivot table
5. Gauge-Semi-circle
6. Year over year (line):
7. Year over year (column):
8. Stacked area
See next slide to learn when to apply these data visualizers
Data Visualizer…
When should you apply different data visualizers? Read on to learn about bar, column
and line graph

Bar chart: Presents data in

rectangular bars, displayed
Column chart: Compare sizes of
horizontally. Used to compare sizes of
related elements, displayed vertically
related items, e.g., compare different
facilities’ or counties performances

Line graph: It uses lines to connect to

individual data points. Used to show
and compare trends over multiple time
periods
Data Visualizer…
When should you apply different data visualizers? Read on to learn about pie chart, single
value and pivot table

Pie chart: Presents data in a

circular graph. Its used when
comparing percentages of
variables, e.g., when
comparing which gender is Single value: Displays a
more affected by a disease. single value.
The pie chart should not have
many variables, as it can get
cluttered

Pivot table: Summarizes the Note:

data of a more extensive table Pivot table will be
and might include sums, discussed in detail in the
averages, or other statistics, session 3
which the pivot table groups
together in a meaningful way.

When should you apply different data visualizers? Read on to learn about area, stacked
bar, stacked column and stacked area

Stacked Bar: Compare parts of

Area: Used to track and compare
a whole against related elements,
changes over time
horizontally

Stacked area: Same as Area,

but the areas of the various
Stacked column: Compare dimension items are stacked on
parts of a whole against related top of each other. Example:
elements, vertically comparing the trends of related
indicators

When should you apply different data visualizers? Read on to learn about gauge semi-
circle, year over year (line & column) and radar

Gauge-Semi-circle: Used to compare a %

Year over year (line): Useful when you
indicator against 100% scale. It displays a
want to compare one year of data to other
single value/indicator, the threshold is 100%
years of data. Based on calendar years.
(start and end values are configured).

Year over year (column): Same as Year Radar: Compare several items against
over year (line), only with columns multiple variables
Creating a Data Visualizer
• To create a visualizer follow the steps in the screenshot below

Step 1: Click on
the apps menu
icon
Step 2: Search Data
Visualizer from Apps
search bar.

Step 3: Click
Data
Visualizer.
Creating a Data Visualizer…
• To select your preferred visualization type,
1. Click on the drop down as shown below
1. Click here

• The screen on the next slide will display showing visualizations available
Selecting Visualization Type
2. Select your preferred visualization type, in this case we shall select ‘Column’

1. Select type of
visualization

3. Next you will filter dimension as shown in the next slides

Selecting Data Dimensions

• Three main Data Dimensions are which you will select from are provided, namely:-

1. Data type: Includes data elements, indicators and datasets (reporting rates),
2. Periods
3. Organization units

In Module three, we learnt about data dimensions. A dimension refers to the elements that
describe the data values in KHIS
1. Data elements: Describes what is collected. Indicators and data sets are other
data types.
2. Periods: Describe when the event took place.
3. Organization units: Describe where the event took place.
Selecting Data Dimensions…

You will select data dimensions as shown in the next slides,

Main Data Dimensions

Selecting Data Dimensions…
We shall start with the 3 main dimensions, starting with ‘Data’.
1. Click on ‘Data’ to select data type you’d like to visualize

1. Click on Data

• The screen on the next page will display

Selecting Data type
Next follow step 2 and 3 as shown below

2. 2. Click the drop down box to

display available data dimension
such as Data Elements, Indicators,
Datasets and select the desired
one

3. Click the drop down to display

data dimension group and Select
the desired data dimension
group e.g. Antenatal
Selecting Data Type…
Let us use example below on selecting data type. Follow steps 1-4
1. Select Indicators

2. Select indicator
group e.g Antenatal

3. Available indicators in that

group will be displayed

5. Click here to update

4. Select the required indicator e.g. 4th

ANC coverage i.e proportion of pregnant
women who attended at least one ANC
visit during pregnancy
Selecting Period
Next we shall select the 2nd Main Dimension i.e ‘Period’. Follow the steps provided
to do this

1. Click on period
Selecting Period…

There are two types of periods namely;

1. Relative periods e.g yesterday, this week, last 3
months, last 5 years
2. Fixed periods e.g January 2022, 2021 etc
Selecting Period…
Next we shall select the 2nd Main Dimension i.e ‘Period’. Follow the steps provided to do this

1. Select either fixed period or relative

period. We shall use ‘fixed periods’

3. Select ‘2022’
2. Select
‘Monthly’
4. Click to add
