Graphic Organizer: Explain the cycle below about the interrelationship of food insecurity with

Poverty: Poverty is a condition characterized by a lack of income and resources, making it difficult for
individuals and households to meet their basic needs. Poverty limits people's access to nutritious food
and leads to food insecurity, as they struggle to afford an adequate and consistent food supply.

Food Insecurity: Food insecurity refers to the inadequate or uncertain access to nutritious and sufficient
food for an active and healthy life. When individuals and households experience food insecurity, they
face challenges in obtaining and consuming nutritious meals regularly. This can lead to malnutrition and
other health problems.

Poor Physical and Cognitive Development: Inadequate access to nutritious food due to food insecurity
can have severe consequences on physical and cognitive development, particularly in children.
Insufficient intake of essential nutrients affects growth, weakens the immune system, and impairs brain
development. As a result, children may experience stunted growth, reduced cognitive abilities, and
increased susceptibility to diseases.

Low Productivity: Poor physical and cognitive development due to food insecurity can lead to low
productivity in both children and adults. Inadequate nutrition negatively impacts physical strength,
cognitive abilities, and concentration, which can hinder educational attainment and employment
opportunities. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty, as individuals struggling with food insecurity often
face limited prospects for economic advancement.

Creative Work. Draw an editorial cartoon using any drawing materials except drawing media about
the concept of global food security. Attach a sketch paper for the drawing. Interpret the artwork as
evidenced from the cartoon using the blank space below. Refer to the following examples for

Global flags: Some flags were associated with countries facing hunger, while others represent
more affluent nations.

Barbed wire or obstacles: This represents the barriers and challenges they face in accessing
adequate food resources.

The cartoon aims to convey the message that there is an imbalance in global food distribution,
with some regions facing hunger while others have an excess of food. It highlights the need for
international cooperation, support, and equitable distribution of resources to achieve global food
security.

As a student, there are several actions I can take to address the problem of food security:

1. Raise Awareness: Educate yourself and others about the issue of food security. Understand the
root causes, consequences, and potential solutions. Share this knowledge with your peers,
teachers, and community through presentations, discussions, or awareness campaigns.

2. Volunteer and Engage: Get involved with local organizations or initiatives that work towards
addressing food insecurity. Volunteer at food banks, community gardens, or soup kitchens.
Participate in food drives and fundraising events. Engaging directly with these initiatives can
make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals experiencing food insecurity.

3. Reduce Food Waste: Take steps to reduce food waste in your own life. Plan meals, shop
mindfully, and avoid overbuying or throwing away edible food. Encourage your school and
community to implement food waste reduction initiatives such as composting programs or
partnerships with local food recovery organizations.

5. Support Local Food Systems: Choose to support local and sustainable food systems whenever
possible. Purchase from local farmers' markets, join community-supported agriculture (CSA)
programs, or start a community garden at your school or in your neighborhood. Supporting local
food systems helps create a more resilient and equitable food system.

Remember that even as a student, you have the power to make a difference. By raising
awareness, taking action, and inspiring others, you can contribute to the collective effort to
alleviate food insecurity and create a more just and sustainable food system.
