Assistant Professor
Department of ECE, NITC
Electronic systems consists of
• A set of input devices
• A set of output devices
• A Processing Unit
• User interface part
• Power supply parts

All these parts are interconnected together in order to get a desired functionality

Embedded systems

Very Difficult to define

Embedded systems
• An embedded system is a programmed controlling and operating system
with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system,
often with real-time computing constraints – Wikipedia

• An electronic system which is designed to perform one or a limited set of

functions, using hardware and software - Lyla B Das

• It is an electronic/electro-mechanical system designed to perform a

specific function and is a combination of both hardware and software -
Shibu K V
Some other definitions
• An embedded system is some combination of computer hardware and
software, either fixed in capability or programmable, that is designed
for a specific function or for specific functions within a larger system

• Any sort of device which includes a programmable computer but itself

is not intended to be a general-purpose computer

• An Embedded System is one that has computer hardware with

software embedded in it as one of its important components. It can be
an independent system or it can be a part of a large system.
Some other definitions
• An embedded system is a micro controller or microprocessor based system
which is designed to perform a specific task.

• A combination of computer hardware and software and perhaps additional

mechanical and other parts, designed to perform a dedicated function

• Any computer system whose end objective is not primarily computational

General Characteristics
• Defined set of functionality

• Includes a computing hardware and software

• Limited Resources

• Applications are not meant to be altered by the user

• Reliable operation
General Purpose PC vs Embedded Systems
General Purpose PC Embedded Systems

• Generic Hardware and General Purpose OS • Special Hardware and OS

• Applications can be altered by the user • Applications are not too much alterable by the user
• Performance is the key deciding factor • Application specific requirements (Performance,
power, memory etc) are the key deciding factors
- Faster is always better
• Highly tailored towards the given application(s)
• Less/not tailored towards any specific application.
• There can be time-critical operations
• Response Requirements are not time-critical
• More deterministic in nature
• Need not be too deterministic in execution
behavior

General Structure of Embedded Systems

• System Core
• Main control unit of the system
• Micro controller/micro processor etc.
• Sensors
• Reads a physical quantity and convert into a language which the system
understands
• Actuators
• Converts system output into a physical quantity
General Structure of Embedded Systems

• User Interface
• Talking to the user
• Display, Switches, Other communication interfaces
• Memory
• Holding control algorithm and other related data
• Power Supply
• Supply the power required by different parts of the system
