CHAPTER-13 MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF ELECTRIC CURRENT

~BY ARYABHATTA’s

Q1. MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION:-

1. An induced EMF is produced when a magnet is moved into a coil. The magnitude of induced EMF
does not depend on:

(a) The speed with which the magnet is moved

(b) The number of turns of the coil

(c) The resistivity of the wire of the coil

(d) The strength of the magnet

2. A metal rod PQ is placed in the magnetic field. The ends of the rod are connected to a
battery using wires.

Where will the rod move?

(a) Upward
(b) Downwards
(c) Into the field
(d) Out of the field
3. In the arrangement shown in Figure, there are two coils wound on a non-conducting cylindrical
rod. Initially, the key is not inserted. Then the key is inserted and later removed. Then

a. The deflection in the galvanometer remains zero throughout.

b. There is a momentary deflection in the galvanometer but it dies out shortly

and there is no effect when the key is removed.

c. There are momentary galvanometer deflections that die out shortly; the
deflections are in the same direction.

d. There are momentary galvanometer deflections that die out shortly; the
deflections are in opposite directions.

4. A circular loop placed in a plane perpendicular to the plane or paper carries a current when the
key is ON. The current as seen from points A and B (in the plane of paper and on the axis of the
coil) is anticlockwise and clockwise respectively. The magnetic field lines point from B to A. The N-
pole or the resultant magnet is on the race close to

(a) A
(b) B
(c) A if the current is small, and B if the current is large
(d) B if the current is small and A if the current is large
Q2. ASSERTION AND REASON BASED:-

1. Assertion (A): As the speed of the coil in the motor increases, there is a reduction in the
current flowing through it.

Reason (R): During rotation in an electric motor, some induced current is produced.

2. Assertion (A): On changing the direction of flow of current through a straight conductor, the
direction of a magnetic field around the conductor is reversed.

Reason (R): The direction of magnetic field around a conductor can be given in accordance with left
hand thumb rule

Q3. Very short type questions:-

1. Give two important advantages of AC over DC.

Q4. Short type questions:-

1. What is meant by earthing? Why should electrical appliances be earthed?

Q5. Long type questions:-

1. a) When is the force experienced by a current-carrying conductor placed in magnetic

field largest?

b) Why is the earth pin thicker and longer than the live and the neutral pins? Page 4
of 7

c) Why don‘t two magnetic lines of force intersect each other?

Q6. Case based question:-

Andre Marie Ampere suggested that a magnet must exert an

equal and opposite force on a current carrying conductor,
which was experimentally found to be true. But we know that
current is due to charges in motion. Thus, it is clear that a
charge moving in a magnetic field experience a force, except
when it is moving in a direction parallel to it. If the direction of
motion is perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field, the
magnitude of force experienced depends on the charge,
velocity (v), strength of magnetic field (B), and sine of the angle
between v and B. Direction of magnetic force is given by
Fleming's left-hand rule.

Read the above passage carefully and give the answer of the following questions:

Q1. If an electron is travelling horizontally towards east, a magnetic field in vertically

downward direction exerts a force on the electron along:

a. east

b. west

c. north

d. south

Q2. If a charged particle is moving along a magnetic field line, the magnetic force on the
particle is:

a. along its velocity

b. opposite to its velocity

c. perpendicular to its velocity

d. zero

Q3. A magnetic field exerts no force on:

a. a stationary electric charge

b. a magnet

c. an electric charge moving perpendicular to its direction

d. an unmagnetised iron bar

Q4. An electron beam enters a magnetic field at right angle to it as shown in the figure. The
direction of force acting on the electron beam will be:

a. to the left d. out of the page

b. to the right

c. to the page
