Modeling the Formation of a Severe Storm

Introduction: Severe weather patterns, such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes, result
from intense interactions between atmospheric forces like air pressure, temperature, and wind.
These powerful events can have significant impacts on the environment and human life. This
laboratory activity will simulate the key processes that lead to severe weather, helping us
understand how these systems develop and behave in Earth's atmosphere.

Objectives:

1. Understand the conditions that lead to the formation of severe storms.

2. Observe how warm and cold air interact to create storm-like effects.
3. Demonstrate the role of convection and air pressure in storm development.

Materials:

 Large clear plastic container (e.g., a storage bin)

 Red and blue food coloring
 Two cups (one with hot water, one with ice water)
 A small plastic divider (or use a thin sheet of plastic or cardboard)
 Spoon or dropper
 Optional: small fan (to simulate wind)

Activity 1: Warm and Cold Air Collision

Procedure

1. Fill the clear plastic container with lukewarm water, leaving about 2 inches of space at
the top.
2. Place the divider in the middle of the container to create two sections.
3. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the cup of hot water and pour it into one section
of the container.
4. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the cup of ice water and pour it into the other
section.
5. Carefully remove the divider and observe how the red and blue water interact.

Activity 2: Simulating Wind in a Storm

Procedure

1. Set the fan at one end of the container and turn it on low speed.
2. Observe how the movement of the water changes as wind (represented by the fan)
interacts with the rising and sinking colored water.
