REPORT ON THE CHILDREN’S SECTION AT SNEYD PUBLIC LIBRARY
Terms of reference:
This report aims at / is aimed at summerising opinions from adult visitors to
improve the library services. It is prepared for the next meeting of the
Library Committee next week.
Proceedings:
Over the last 4 weeks, a survey form has been sent to each parent’s email
address to elicit their feedback on their experiences in the library. The
comments and suggestions have been processed and arranged into
different categories for easy consideration.
Findings:
The feedback from the parents indicates that there are some drawbacks
that the library should take action to overcome.
1.Lack of foreign folk and fairy tales
The parents find that there is a shortage of folk and fairy tales from other
countries like those from Asia that many children are interested in such
as Chinese tales. Many parents say that Asia is emerging in culture and
history, so their children would much like to read stories from Asian
countries, while most of the books provided here are tales from European
nations.
2.Short opening hours and limited technological devices
Most schools finish their teaching at 5 pm, but the closing time of the
library is 6.30pm, which is a drawback for children’s reading. In addition,
the limited number of computers available hinders many children from
accessing e-books, audio and visual files, and softwares while children
are really keen on digital materials.
3.Inadequate seats and family space
The humble quantity of seats is also a matter of great concern for many
parents, particularly at the weekend when the number of children using
the library can amount to a few hundred, making many children have to
sit on the floor. Shortage of family space seems to be another minus
point as families would rather spend time together in other locations like
a coffee shop / café than go to the library.
Conclusion:
The comments above from the respondents indicate that the library faces
the fact that the facilities available cannot satisfy the demands of the
users. Furthermore, the opening hours are not suitable for children’s
learning schedules, which can demotivate their reading.
Recommendations:
To deal with the shortage of books on Asian fairy and folk tales, it is
recommended that they be purchased from old books shop with affordable
prices, suiting our current financial situation. Moreover, the opening hours
in the Children’s Section can be extended until 8.00 in the evening and set
later in the morning both to resolve children’s reading time and to ensure
the working time.
Regarding the digital devices, it is suggested buying around 10 laptops
from Star Computer Ltd, which sells products at reasonable prices. Laptops
are the better option than personal computers as they can help save space
for the library. Additionally, around nearly 50 foldable desks, which are
highly portable, should be placed / set up by the windows and in the
corners to provide adequate seats for users.
Family space can be provided through the installation of a prefabricated
house / room, which costs more or less $20,000, much cheaper than
carrying out any construction. Such a room can be easily converted into
any space for other purposes if needed.
