MAIN TOPIC: STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE TOWARDS USING
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES AS A CENTRE OF ACADEMIC
PURPOSES IN UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA SABAH.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In this accelerate-forward era which Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) has

been changing the norms around the world. Whereby student can learn from
using a digital message, visual-call even from far away which is very convenient
and yet might expose student’s weakness. One of the aspects that require for
progressing through using communication technologies such as mobile phone,
social networks, chat rooms and video sharing is firstly students need a sufficient
facility such as better internet, and a device which able to support or open any
software such as PDF and any Microsoft Office in order to strive their study to be
effective. Other than that, every student has different perspective which others
prefer a traditional class (Face-to-face) and others are capable furthering their
studies only by using communication technologies. In using communication
technologies (smartphones, social media, TV) for educational purposes it affects
the student’s perspective because they have to use their gathering information
skills, being innovative and able to communicate effectively with their lecturers
or comprehend what the messages is convey from the lecturer. According to
Denizalp, H., & Ozdamli, F. (2019) nowadays, social networks and smartphones
are used often purposely for efficiency of communication in teacher and student
relationships which not only used for leisure activity.

Especially in the twentieth-century, communication technologies have

been part of everyone’s life including learning. According to Clarke et al., (2013)
Which this leads to preparing student’s life for their future as when they reach
their working life, they are capable in using technologies. Other than that, this
also increase student’s motivation in learning according to Ciampa, (2014).
Communication is an essential part in learning process as it is important to
improve clarity in processing information as it delivers to the subject especially
online classes. But every student has different perspective towards
understanding certain information if system communication is a part for
academic purposes then it would lead to different result and student perspective
will be affected if they only learn by distance without direct face-to-face.
The usage of communication has effectively improved within days
especially nowadays era which most of students have their own devices and they
develop their skills in using technologies and their constantly changing
perspectives in using communication technologies as part of their studies. The
usage of smart phones with constant development of technologies, which is IR4
that makes the internet expand widely. Chat rooms, virtual communications,
social networks, blogs, videos sharing has become part of people’s living centers
(Denizalp, H., & Ozdamli, F. 2019)

2.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDIES

The purpose of this study is to determine the student’s perspective

towards communication technologies for academic purposes which determines
either the idea or belief on using communication technologies is effective. Which
this could bring the relationship between the attitude or manner towards
communication technologies which measures the productivity and their
motivation in using such as video sharing (tutorial video or educational
informative video), chat room as to initiate their work or online class or meeting,
social networks which can spread education information in the internet. Other
than that, communication technologies could be a great thing for students but
some activity requires Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skill
which it is an electronic system for communication between individuals or in
groups such as Fax, television and video. In that case, this could improve and in-
depth exposure to the skills that require for their future working lives.

Some studies shown towards student’s perspective towards using

communication technologies such as mobile phones. According to Koroglu (2004)
that some participants who is using social networks for communication with
friends have a lower level of passive-aggressive and having a paranoid
personality belief about themselves. Regarding the personality, student’s
perspective using communication technologies has shown positive attitude and
manner such as having a positive and mature mind which could lead to better
performances for their academic purposes besides having a personality disorder.
Other than that, by communicating with friends will keep up their work progress
and reminding them for future assignments and working together while
communicating from a distant shows an effectively progression in a certain
assignment.

Other than that, using technology for education would help both individual
and cooperative works which means regarding from the young people who is
addicted in using technology for communication into a technology education
becomes more attractive and makes the interaction much easy (Denizalp, H., &
Ozdamli, F. 2019). Which it also helps the delivery and teaching which enhances
student’s clarity in understanding certain task or subjects, in using
communication technologies such as PowerPoint or online class that has been
recorded can become references for students in the future in case, they forgot
what have they learn before.

The journal from Denizalp, H., & Ozdamli, F. (2019) finding that some
student stated that using social media and mobile applications has become an
essential need to understand each other better and making empathy between
students and teacher with low cost. Next, according to Olofsson, A.D., Lindberg,
O.J. and Fransson, G. (2018) finding was, the student stated that in using
information and communication technology helps them through ongoing
documentation of their school work and being able to compile all their stuff in
one place and much more organize so student can easily search for things. With
this, student having a positive perspective towards communication technology
that helps and ease their progress in doing their task or assignments and also
reducing stress and avoiding loss of information.

As the words turn into modern era, Industrial Revolution 4.0 has changed
the scope of the studies norms and teaching which involve class and studying
without meeting face-to-face which could affect the student perspective towards
communication technology. Regarding the idea, the purpose of this research is
to identify the student’s perspective towards communication technology for
academic purposes.
3.0 ISSUE AND PROBLEM STATEMENT

study for or what it needs and what problem that influence this study to further
the research from the current practices.

The purpose of this study is to identify:

RQ1: Does communication technology affect students’ perspective in a
positive way or negative way?
