Experiment - 11
Aim: - To identify the presence of Carbohydrate in the given sample.
Material Required:- Given Sample, water bath, Conc. H2SO4, 𝛼 − 𝑛𝑎𝑝𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑙, Fehling A ,
Fehling B solution, Bendict’s reagent, Tollen’s reagent, iodine solution
S.No. Tests Observations Inference( Presence
of)
1. Conc. H2SO4 Test:- Take a little Charring with burnt Carbohydrates
sample in the test tube and add sugar smell present
conc. H2SO4
2. Molisch’s Test:- Take a little A reddish-purple ring Carbohydrates
aqueous solution of carbohydrates is formed at the present ( a reducing
in a test tube. Add 2 drops of 1% junction of two layers. sugar is present)
𝛼 − 𝑛𝑎𝑝𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑙. Now, add
conc.H2SO4 along the side of test
tube.
3. Fehling’s Test:-Take a little Yellow or red Carbohydrates
sample in the test tube. Add to it 1 precipitate present
ml of Fehling’s solution ( mixture
of equal quantity of Fehling’s
solution A and Fehling’s solution
B). Heat the test tube on a water
bath
4. Benedict Solution Test:- Take a Red precipitate Carbohydrates
little sample and add 2 ml of present ( a reducing
Benedict’s reagent. Heat the test sugar is present)
tube for some time.
5. Tollen’s Test:- To a little sample Formation of shining Carbohydrates
add 2 ml of tollen’s reagent silver along the present
(ammoniacal silver nitrate surface of the test
solution). Heat the test tube on the tube.
water bath.
6. Iodine test:- ( Test for Starch)
To a little sample add a few drops Deep blue colour Carbohydrates
of iodine solution. present ( starch)
