Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson students will be able to:

 Describe how pollination leads to fertilization

 Explain the formation of seeds and fruits

HOW DOES FERTILISATION LEAD TO THE
FORMATION OF A SEED?

If a pollen
. grain reaches a stigma of the same species, it

can grow a pollen tube.

The stigma makes a sugary solution, providing a source

of energy for the pollen tube to grow down the style and

into the ovary. Eventually the tube reaches an ovule

The next stage is fertilization,
in which the egg cell and the male gamete
from the pollen grain join together and their
nuclei fuse into one.
This forms a zygote (fertilized egg cell).

The zygote splits into two (using a process

called cell division). These cells divide again
and again to form an embryo. The embryo
develops a tiny root and a tiny shoot.
Seeds and fruits

The ovule becomes the seed.

Inside the seed is the embryo, together with a
store of food (such as starch).
A hard seed coat forms around the seed to
protect it.
When the seed starts to germinate, it uses the store
of food to allow the embryo to grow.

The ovary expands and becomes the fruit around the

seed.
Questions
1 a) Describe how the nuclei from an egg cell and the male gamete
reach one another, after pollination.
b) What is formed after the nuclei have fused?
c) What is the name of this process?

2 How many cells will one cell become after cell division has happened
three times?

3 What does the zygote go on to form?

c) What is the name of this process?

Answer:

a) A pollen grain grows a pollen tube down to the ovule, where the egg cell is found.

The male gamete is carried in the pollen tube to the egg cell in the ovule.

b) fertilized egg cell or zygote

c) Fertilization
2 How many cells will one cell become after cell
division has happened three times?
Answer: Eight cells

3 What does the zygote go on to form?

Answer: An embryo
P-33

4 What part takes up most of a seed?.

Answer: Food store

5 Look at photo D.
From what part of the flower did the fleshy fruit develop?

Answer: Ovary school

Number the statements in the order that describes
what happens after pollination.

The first one has been done for you.

1 A pollen grain sticks to the stigma.

 The male gamete joins the female gamete in the ovule.
 The male gamete moves down the pollen tube to the ovule.
 The nuclei of the gametes fuse to form a zygote.
 A tube grows from the grain down through the style to the ovule.
