What is Oral Language?

Oral language is the process of utilizing knowledge and skills to speak and listen effectively
through the proper use of true to life ideas/information, words, and grammar.

In communication, oral language should have the following characteristics.

1. An appropriate oral language should be clear with correct grammar, conciseness, and should be
specific.

2. An appropriate oral language should be direct and conversational with the use of proper
pronouns like I, you, us, my, me, mine, your, yours etc.

3. An oral language should be appropriate and suitable to purpose of the speaker.

How do we use oral language in giving information, instructions, making explanations and
narrating events in factual recounts?

A. Giving information can be done by telling people about facts and as well as making
announcements

B. Giving instructions can be done by giving orders or directions.

C. Making explanations can be done by giving procedures or steps on how to do something

orderly and telling how something happened.

D. Narrating events can be done by retelling events you have experience in the past.
Communication is more than just the use or words or oral language. Non-verbal cues like body
language or movements also help us express our ideas/emotions. Non-verbal language includes
stance and behavior.

A. Stance refers to how someone stands when speaking. This simply refers to the posture of the
speaker during communication.

B. Behavior refers to how someone acts when speaking

This includes pitch, pauses, space or distance, eye contact, and other bodily gestures.

Pitch is the highness or lowness of the voice.

Pauses are used to separate and to emphasize ideas.

Space or distance is the amount of physical distance between the speaker and the listener.

Eye contact is the use of eyes in communication.

Looks and Gestures refer to the use of facial expressions and body movements to express ideas
and emotions.
