LESSON
This lesson is created to help you prepare an AutoCAD layout of a good roof plan
design using the same floor plan made in the preceding lessons.
ROOF is the top covering of the uppermost part of a building or shelter which provide
protection from animals and weather, rain or snow, heat, wind and sunlight. It is the
external upper covering of a house or building. It shows the size, shape and the type
of materials that should be used in the roofing system.

TYPES OF ROOFS:
1. GABLE ROOF
A gable roof is consists of two roof sections sloping in opposite directions in such a
way that the highest horizontal edges meet to form the ridge.
2. HIP ROOFS
A Hip roof is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls. They
commonly are used when eave-line protection is desired around the entire perimeter
of the building.
3. FLAT ROOFS
A flat roof is a roof structure which is almost level in contrast to the many types of
sloped roofs.
4. DORMER ROOF
A dormer roof is a roof structure often containing a window that projects vertically
beyond the plane of a pitched roof.
5. LEAN-TO-ROOF
Defined as a single slope roof with its upper edge adjoining a wall or a building. It is
a type of simple structure originally added to an existing building.
7. GAMBREL ROOF
It is a roof with two slopes on each sides with the lower slope much steeper than
the upper.
8. DOME ROOF
Dome- is a hemispherical roof form.
9. BUTTERFLY ROOF
(Sometimes called V roof) is a form of roof characterized by an inversion of a standard
roof form, with two surfaces sloping down from opposing edges to a valley near the
middle of the roof.
Below is the floor plan made in the previous lesson showing the roof lines made of
hidden lines.
A roof plan is one showing the outline of the roof and the major object lines
indicating ridges, valleys, hips and openings. The roof plan is not a framing plan, but
a 2D plan view of the roof.
A. Directions: Identify the different roof types below. Write your answer on the
blank provided.

B. Directions: Arrange the steps in making a simple roof plan in its proper order
using letters A-H. Write your answer on the blank provided.
