Instructions

All nonimmigrant visa applicants must present a passport valid for at least six months, a
completed DS-160 for each applicant, a receipt of payment, and a compliant photo.

F, J, and M Visas: Student visa applicants should present their valid I-20 or DS-2019; the
letter of acceptance and any offer of scholarship or financial aid from the academic
institution; academic transcripts and test scores; and financial or banking documents
showing how they will pay educational, living, and travel costs.

H, L, O, P, Q, and R Visas: Petition-based visa applicants must present proof of the


approved petition in forms I-129 or I-797 from USCIS, along with evidence of required
experience and/or educational degree.

H, I, L, and R Visas: If approved, H-1B, H-4, I, L-1, L-2, R-1, and R-2 applicants are subject
to an additional reciprocity fee that must be paid in cash (in USD or GHC) at the consular
section before the visa can be printed.

H, J, L, O, P, Q, and R Visas: You must read the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet to
learn about your rights in the United States and protection available to you. Review this
important pamphlet before applying for your visa.

Immigrant Visas: Follow IV instructions prior to and the day of your immigrant visa
interview. Applicants for marriage-based immigrant visa classifications (IR-1, CR-1, K-1, K-3,
and F2A) must read about rights and protections for fiancé(e)s and spouses. Applicants for
follow-up interview: please bring additional documents as requested by the consular section
and ensure that your DS-260 has been re-submitted at ceac.state.gov/iv/.

Prohibited Items:
You should bring only the required documents in an unsealed transparent plastic bag or
folder. Mobile phones and most purses/bags are not permitted. We do not provide a facility
for storage of any items. The following items are prohibited:

Battery-operated or electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital diaries, pagers,


cameras, audio/video cassettes, compact discs, MP3s, floppy disks, flash drives,
memory sticks, Bluetooth devices, laptop or tablet computers, or portable music
players
Large shoulder bags/purses, travel bags, backpacks, briefcases, or suitcases. Only
bags that can be carried by hand will be permitted like unsealed plastic bags containing
application-related papers, small cloth bags, or zip folders
Food or drink items
Cosmetics (including, but not limited to, spray perfume/cologne and talcum/baby
powder)
Sealed envelopes or packages
Flammable items such as cigarettes, cigars, match boxes, or lighters
Sharp objects, including scissors, pocketknives, penknives, or nail files
Weapons, weapon-like objects, or explosive material of any kind
Long-handled umbrellas (longer than 40 cm when closed)

There is no facility at the Embassy to store prohibited items. You must make
arrangements to store these items before you enter the Embassy. Due to security
considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the Embassy.

Who can attend the interview?


Only visa applicants with an appointment will be admitted to the Embassy. The only
exceptions are the following. Everyone entering the Embassy must present a
government-issued photo ID:

Parents or legal guardians of minor applicants (younger than 18 years old);


A person assisting an elderly or disabled applicant;
A translator accompanying an applicant who does not speak English;
Any other person specifically requested by a consular officer (must present either a
221(g) letter requesting their presence or an email from the Visa Unit).

You must only enter the correct DS-160 confirmation number for your specific visa
application. Your visa application will be processed based on this DS-160 confirmation
number. Failure to provide the correct number may result in rejection of your visa application
and/or cancellation of your visa interview appointment.
