𝑑2 𝑥 𝑑𝑥
b) + = tan(𝑥 + 𝑡)
𝑑𝑡 2 𝑑𝑡
c) 𝑥 2 𝑦′′′ − 6𝑥𝑦 ′ + 15𝑦 = 𝑒 𝑥
d) 𝑦[1 + (𝑦 ′ )2 ] = ln 𝑡

𝑦 = 𝑥 2/3 is a solution of the differential equation 3𝑥𝑦 ′ − 2𝑦 = 0

3) Determine whether the indicated function is an explicit solution to the given differential equation and
give at least one interval of definition for each solution.
a) 𝑦 = 1/(4 − 𝑥 2 ), 𝑦 ′ = 2𝑥𝑦 2
b) 𝜃 = 2𝑒 3𝑡 − 𝑒 2𝑡 , 𝜃 ′′ − 𝜃𝜃 ′ + 3𝜃 = −2𝑒 2𝑡

c) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 −1 − 𝑦=0
𝑑𝑥 2 𝑥2

4) Determine whether the given relation is an implicit solution to the given differential equation. Can you
find an explicit solution? . If you can then give its interval of definition.
𝑑𝑦 2𝑥𝑦
a) 𝑦 − ln 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 1 =
𝑑𝑥 𝑦−1

b) ln ( 𝑥−1 ) = 𝑡 = (𝑥 − 1)(1 − 2𝑥)
𝑑𝑡

5) Show that 𝜑(𝑥) = 𝑐1 𝑥 −1 + 𝑐2 𝑥 + 𝑐3 𝑥 𝑙𝑛 𝑥 + 4𝑥 2 is a solution to 𝑥 3 𝑦′′′ + 2𝑥 2 𝑦 ′′ − 𝑥𝑦 ′ + 𝑦 = 12𝑥 2 for

any choice of the constants c1 and c2. Thus 𝑐1 𝑥 −1 + 𝑐2 𝑥 + 𝑐3 𝑥 𝑙𝑛 𝑥 + 4𝑥 2 is a three-parameter family of
solutions to the differential equation.

6) Find values of m so that the function 𝑦 = 𝑒 𝑚𝑥 is a solution to 𝑦 ′′ − 5𝑦 ′ + 6𝑦 = 0.

7) Find values of m so that the function 𝑦 = 𝑥 𝑚 is a solution to 𝑥 2 𝑦 ′′ − 7𝑥𝑦 ′ + 15𝑦 = 0, where 𝑥 > 0.
