COMPLIANCE TIME: Within the next one hundred (100)

hours of operation or at the next
scheduled maintenance event, which-
ever occurs first.

PURPOSE: It has been determined that the possibility exists

that bolts securing the Main Landing Gear Pivot Shaft Assembly, Piper Part NO.
43286-02, to the main spar may be of insufficient length, preventing full
thread engagement into the nut plates.

Left uncorrected, the bolts may back out of the nut plates, allowing the pivot
shaft assembly to loosen. This condition could result in failure of a main
landing gear.

This Service Release provides instructions for inspection/replacement of

bolts.

SERVICE BULLETIN NO, 768A PAGE 2 OF 3

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Remove inspection plates to gain access to the main landing gear pivot
shaft assembly, Piper Part No. 43286-02. (See Sketch A, Figure 1).
2. Remove each bolt, one (1) bolt at a time; then reinsert bolt through
shaft assembly until approximately one (1) full thread is engaged in the
nut plate. Apply tension to bolt head and measure gap between bolt
head and shaft assembly.

A dimension of .370/.385 is required to assure full thread engagement.

(See Sketch A, Figure 2).

Should it be determined that the gap dimension is less than .370,

remove bolt and replace it with the next longer /AN4-**A bolt to
obtain proper dimension. (**Bolt length i-s by l/8 inch increments,
e.g., AN4-7A is 29/32 inch long). The addition of one (1) l/32 in.
washer is permitted under bolt head to prevent the bolt shank from
running out of thread.

Repeat above procedure for the remainder of the bolts and on the
opposite Landing Gear Pivot Shaft.

Note: Should any bolts be found to be loose or missing

due to insufficient thread engagement, immediately
contact Product Support, Piper Aircraft Corporation,
Lakeland, Florida Division.

3. Torque bolts to 70 in. lbs.

4. Replace inspection plates, and make appropriate logbook entry of
