AP Biology Lab Report Procedures

Title - Be as specific as possible and briefly denote the primary topic dealt with during
the experimentation..

Abstract - This is a brief 50 - 100 words summary and overview of your lab. It should
include the question, a brief summary of the procedures, and an overview of the
results

Introduction - In this section of the report, written in paragraph format, you should
include the following pieces of information:
a. Background information that will help them understand the experiment that
you have conducted. Important terms should be defined in the section.
b. Purpose of the lab and should be clearly stated in the introduction.
c. Hypothesis – a testable hypothesis should be included, written in an if-then
format.

Procedures: In a paragraph, clearly state the procedures that were followed to conduct
the lab. Any materials that were used would be included in this portion as well.
Pictures and images that help explain the procedure would be appropriate in
this section, but ensure that a heading is included for each.

Results/Data Collection/Analysis - All of the data that was collected during the
experiment should be presented in a data table or tables. Additionally, a graph of the
data should be included in this section. Make sure that the graph is appropriately titled
and axes labeled. The graph should include error bars if applicable to the experimental
design. Ensure that all tables and graphs have headings.

Discussion/Conclusions - This portion of the report is used to clearly explain whether

the results support or refute the hypothesis being tested. Explain what your findings
mean and what conclusions you can draw from the data. Sources of error and
suggestions for improvement should be included in this section. Use specific numbers
from you data as evidence of any claims that are made. Include the following in the
conclusion:
● state a valid conclusion & explain
● discuss the results of your experiment
● explain any unexpected results & why those results may have been obtained
● evaluate the data to determine if it supports your hypothesis using specific
reference to the data
● evaluate the procedure, making suggestions for improvement if needed •
identify weaknesses & state realistic improvements
● what did you learn from this lab?
