Linear static analysis of a 3D model

Step 1: Load the 3D model
1. Click on “import model” browse for 3D Analysis.hm and select it.
2. Click the Open button.
3. The model is opened and displayed in the graphics area.

4. Check the overall mesh.

Step 2: Create Property and material

1. Right-click in the Model Browser and select Create > Material
2

2. Create a new MAT1 material (Steel) with the following properties:

Step 3: Create a PSOLID property and assign it to the respective component

1. Right-click in the Model Browser and select Create > Property. Create the following property
(Solid Property), then attach the material to the property as shown:

2. Expand the Components section of the Model Browser tree and right-click on the engine mount
component. Select Assign from the context-sensitive menu. Assign the Solid Property to the
engine mount component and click OK.
3

Step 4: Create pressure load and boundary conditions

1. Right-click in the Model Browser and select Create > Load Collector. Name it “Pressure”.

2. From the menu bar clic on BCs > Create > Pressures:

3. Set the entity selector on “Faces” and choose the upper flat ring area and apply a pressure of
2.0 MPa magnitude.
4

4. Right-click in the Model Browser and select Create > Load Collector. Name it “Fixed”.
5. From the menu bar clic on BCs > Create > Constraints.
6. With a selector set on “Faces” choose the following bottom of the solid. Keep the six Degrees of
freedom selected.

The bottom faces of the solid will be fixed.

Step 5: Create a new loadcase for pressure loading and request outputs
1. Right-click in the Model Browser and select Create > Load step. Name it “Linear static”.
2. Set the Analysis Type Linear static and set the other values as shown.

3. Enter the control cards panel on the Analysis page. Navigate to the second page and enter the
GLOBAL_OUTPUT_REQUEST.

4. Activate the check box for STRAIN, STRESS and DISPLACEMENT, setting FORMAT (1) to H3D and
OPTION (1) to ALL.
5. Exit the control cards panel.

Step 6: Run the model in OptiStruct

1. On the Analysis page, enter the OptiStruct panel.
2. Set run options: to analysis and the options: to –out.
3. Click the OptiStruct button to launch the solver and solve the model.
6

4. When the run completes, click the Results button to load the analysis results into a new
HyperView window.
