Eccentric connections
There are two principal types of eccentrically loaded connection:
1. Bolt group in direct shear and torsion.
2. Bolt group in direct shear and tension.

These connections are given in figure 1

Figure 1. Eccentricity loaded connection

1) Bolts in direct shear and torsion:

Consider the group of bolts shown in figure 2(a) where the load P is applied at an
eccentricity e. the bolts A, B etc. are at distance , etc. from the centroid of the
group. The coordinates of each bolt are ( , ),( , ),etc. let the force due to
moment on bolt A be . This is the force on the bolt farthest from the center of
rotation. Then the force on a bolt from the center of rotation is ⁄ and so on
for all the other bolts in the group.

The moment of resistance of the bolt group is:

The resultant force on the bolt A can be found graphically
Vertical load on bolt A= + cos∅
Horizontal load on bolt A= sin∅
Resultant load on bolt A
.

.
= + +2 ∅
Example 1:
Check that the joint shown in figure below is adequate. All data required are given
the figure

3
Solution:
Factored load =(1.4× 60) + (1.6 × 80) = 212
Moment M= (212 × 525) × 10 =111.3 KN.m
Bolt group ∑ = 12 × 250 = 750 × 10
∑ = 4(35 + 105 + 175 ) = 171.5 × 10
∑ + ∑ = 921.5 × 10
cos∅= 250⁄305.16 = 0.819
Bolt A is the bolt with the maximum load
. × × .
Load due to moment= = 36.85
. ×

Load due to shear=212⁄12 = 17.67

Resultant load on bolt

Single-shear value of 24mm diameter ordinary bolt on the threads
From table 33 =56.4KN
Universal column flange thickness =17.3mm
Side-plate thickness =45mm

4
Bearing capacity of the plates
= 25 × 15 ×× 460 × 10 = 166
≤ 1⁄2 × 45 × 15 × 460 × 10 = 155
The joint is satisfactory.

2. Bolt in direct shear and tension:

An approximately method of analysis that gives conservative result is described first.
A bracket subjected to a factored load P at an eccentricity e is shown in figure 2 (a).
the center of rotation is assumed to be at the bottom bolt in the group. The loads vary
linearly as shown in figure, with maximum load in the top bolt.
The moment of resistance of bolt group is:
= 2[ . + . ⁄ + ⋯]
=2 ⁄ .[ + + ⋯]

The maximum bolts tension is:

= . /2∑
The vertical shear per bolts:
= ⁄ .

Accurate method:
In more accurate method of analysis, the applied moment is assumed to be resisted
by the bolts in tension with uniformly varying loads and an area at the bottom of
the bracket in compression, as shown in figure 3.

The total compression is given by:
C=0.5 .b.y
Where b = is stiff bearing width
( − − )
= ( − )+ … + 2⁄ 3 .
( − )
Applied moment M=P. e
Actual bolt tension = . ⁄

8
Example (2):

Determine the diameter of the ordinary bolt required for the bracket in figure
below. The joint dimension and loads are shown in the figure. Use grade 4.6 bolts.
Solution:
Try 20 mm diameter ordinary bolts. From table 32
Tension capacity = 47.7
The design strength from table 6 of the code for plates:

9
20 mm thick = 265 /
Return to the figure above where the depth of natural axis is y, the total tension is:
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )
T=95.4 1 + + + +
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

= 95.4 (1050 − 5 )⁄(350 − )

The width of stiff bearing
b=15+2 × 20 = 55
the total compression in terms of y is given by:
C= 1⁄2 × 265 × 55 × 10 =7.29y KN
Equate C and TType equation here.
7.29 − 3028 + 100170 = 0
Solve the equation given y=36.25mm
The moment of resistance is
95.4 (280 − 36.25) (210 − 36.25)
= (350 − 36.25) + +
10 (350 − 36.25) (350 − 36.25)
(140 − 36.25) (70 − 36.25) 7.29 × 36.25 × 2
+ + +
(350 − 36.25) (350 − 36.25) 3 × 10
=67.17 KN.m
Factored load =(1.4× 80) + (1.6 × 75) = 232
Factored moment=232 × 200 × 10 = 46.4 .
Actual tension in top bolts
=46.4× 47.7⁄67.17 = 32.95KN
Direct shear per bolt=232/10=23.2KN
Shear capacity on threads = 39.9
Tension capacity = 47.4
Combined shear and tension

10
23.2 32.95
+ = + = 1.28 < 1.4
39.2 47.7
Therefore, the 24 mm dimeter bolts are satisfactory
