CALCULATION SHEETS

1. OBJECTIVES:
These calculations are for the determination of Protection Settings and Relay Co-ordination for the
Electrical System of 33/11 kV, Shinas Grid substation Outgoing feeders to Rumailah Grid station.
2. NETWORK CONDITIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS:
2.1 The fault currents used for the protection settings calculation are based upon the maximum 3-Phase &
1-Phase Phase fault levels at 33kV bus of Shinas Grid substation, the data is provided by client. The
fault currents are as follows :
Sr. No. Source Grid station & Bus 3-Ph fault current in kA 1-Ph fault current in kA

1 Shinas Grid substation 33kV Bus 19.41 3.0

2.2 Independent operation of 33kV Incomer feeders from Shinas Grid substation & Rumailah Substation is
considered on 33kV side whereas for 11kV bus parallel operation of 2 x 20 MVA Transformer is
considered for protective relay settings. This operating philosophy is confirmed by client.
2.3 It is assumed that in 33kV Switchgear Panel, Incomer-1 &2 connected with Bus A & B respectively and
bus coupler will be in open.
2.4 The fault current on 11kV bus is calculated considering single as well as double feed circuit, however
for the purpose of protective relay settings maximum fault current with independent operation of
transformers and single feed operation of 33kV incoming source is considered.
2.5 For over current co-ordination IEC defined Standard Inverse (SI) curve is used.
The equation of the curve is,

0.14
Operating time, t (sec.) = TMS
(PSM)0.02 - 1

2.6 Setting of instantaneous overcurrent element for transformer feeders shall be greater than
a) 1.3 x transformer maximum symmetrical through fault current, and
b) Maximum magnetising inrush current to avoid any undesirable tripping during switching.
Where manufacturer’s data is not available, magnetising inrush current is generally assumed to be 10 x
full load current for 100 msecs.
2.7 Minimum grading margin of 0.3 sec. is considered between the two relays for proper coordination.
2.8 The overcurrent & earth fault relay make and model number for 33kV outgoing feeder at Shinas Grid
Substation is assumed to be Siemens 7SJ8021.

Contribution in reverse direction = 2.12 kA
PS = 0.5 In
PSM = {Fault Current / (PS x CT Ratio)}
PSM = {(2.12 x 1000) / (0.5 x 400)}
PSM = 10.58
Operating time of 67 desired = 0.1 sec

At 5% tap, the differential current = 1.007 - 0.911
= 0.096 A
At -15% tap, the differential current = 1.123 - 1.007 A
= 0.116 A
Thus the tap changer error = 0.116 x 100
= 11.6%
C.T. errors = 5% (Assumed)

Calculation for Requirement of Non linear resistor
When the maximum voltage appearing across the relay circuit during internal faults exceeds 3000V peak, a non -
linear resistor must be connected across the CT to protect CTs, relay and interconnecting leads.

The max developed voltage across relay circuit Vp = 2 x (SQRT(2Vk x (Vf + Vk)))
where, Vf = If*1/CTR*(Rct+2Rl+Rs)
= 1671 V
hence, Vp = 2763.26 V
Since the Peak voltage is lower than 3000V, non linear resistor is not required, though the same shall be
verified by vendor.
Hence Summarizing,
Fault current setting Is = 0.2
Stabilizing resistors Rs = 275 ohms

33kV Feeder Cable Differential Protection (87C) with Backup Distance Protection (21) for Shinas
II)
Grid O/G Feeder
2.1 Outgoing Feeder to Rumailah from Shinas Grid station :
Cable Differential Protection Setting (87C)
Type of Relay = 7SD522 *
Relay Location = --
CT Ratio (N) = 400 /1 A

A Pick value of differential current (I-DIFF>)

The charge current (Ic) = 3.63 x 10-6 x UN x fN x CB' x s
Ic = Charging current to be calculated in A primary
UN = Nominal Voltage of the network in kV primary
= 33 kV
fN = Nominal frequency of the network in Hz
= 50 Hz
CB' = Per unit line length service capacitance of the line in nF/km
= 0.23 µF (assumed)
s = Length of the line in km
= 9.9 km

The charge current (Ic) = 3.63 x 10^-6 x 33 x 50 x 230 x 9.9

= 13.64 A

For the setting with primary values at least double the value is to be set i.e.
Setting value I-DIFF> = 28
As per Siemens manual the pick value should not be less than 15% of the full scale current
15% of full scale current = 0.15 x 400
= 60 A
Converting into secondary = 60 / 400
= 0.15
Hence considering the default setting i.e.
I-DIFF> = 0.2 A (As per Client Comments)

B Pick value during switch-on (I-DIF>SWITCH ON)

As per Siemens manual the setting shall be three to four times the steady-state charging
current usually ensures the stability of the protection during switch-on of the line.
Hence,
fourt times of charging
= 4 x 13.64
current
= 55 A
Converting into secondary = 55 / 400
= 0.1375
Set I-DIF>SWITCH ON = 0.2 A

C Delays (T-DELAY I-DIFF> and T3I0 1PHAS)

As per Siemens manual T-DELAY I-DIFF is set with delay for tripping of the differential
protection only in special case e.g. in case of revserse interlocking or else the setting is given
below:
Set T-DELAY I-DIFF> = 0.0 sec

Appendix-4A Protection relay setting-_Rev B 3 of 10

CALCULATION SHEETS APPENDIX - 4A

As per Siemens manual if the differential protection is applied to an isolated or

resonant-earthed network, it must be ensured that tripping is avoided due to the transient
oscillations of a single earth fault. Pickup on a single fault is therefore delayed for 0.04 s
(default setting).
Hence T3I0 1PHAS = 0.04 sec

D I>RELEASE DIFF
As per Siemens manual it is desired that a TRIP command is generated in the event of an
internal fault only if simultaneously the current of the local line end has exceeded a specific
quantity, then this current threshold can be set for enabling the differential protection TRIP.
Hence,
I>RELEASE DIFF = 0.00 A (Min. local current to release DIFF-Trip)

E Ic-comp. = OFF

F IcSTAB/IcN = 2.5 (As per Siemens manual recommendation)

G Pickup value of charge comparison stage (I-DIFF>>)

As per Siemens manual this stage reacts very quickly, a pickup of capacitive charging
current must be excluded.
Hence, set this value to 4 times the I-DIFF>
I-DIFF>> = 0.8 A

H INRUSH RESTRAINT
Set
INRUSH REST = OFF

I 2nd HARMONIC = 15%

J CROSS BLOCK = NO

K MAX INRUSH PEAK = 15 A

L CROSS 2HM = 0.00 sec

Resistance Reach calculations including arc resistance, etc. for phase faults

As per the calculation guidelines indicated in Siemens 7SA6 manual, a maximum arc voltage of 8kV can
be assumed for phase faults, which corresponds to the minimum to 4.8 Ω for the relay, as per Siemens
manual.

Hence R (secondary) = 4.8 x 400 / 300

= 6.40 Ω secondary

As per Siemens setting guidelines, the line resistance itself can be ignored.
Hence,
R(Z1) phase = R(Z2) ph = R(Z3)ph= R(Z4) ph = 6.40 Ω secondary

X(Z1) = 3.43 Ω secondary

X(Z2) = 5.14 Ω secondary
X(Z3) = 13.03 Ω secondary

Zone-4 Reverse settings = Disabled

Resistance Reach calculations including arc resistance, etc. for earth faults
As per Siemens Manual 7SA6 (C5300-G1176-C156-5) page No 102

"The resistance RL of the line itself can be ignored with SIPROTEC 4 devices. It is taken into account by
the shape of the polygon"

Appendix-4A Protection relay setting-_Rev B 7 of 10

CALCULATION SHEETS APPENDIX 4A

Hence as per Siemens recommendations , the setting must consider the fault resistance which appears as
an additional resistance at the fault location and is added to the impedance of the line. It comprises, for
example, the resistance in arcs, the earth distribution resistance of earth points and others.

The general formula as per siemens 7SA6 gives

RRE = RL1 + 1.2 x (1 + I2/I1) (( Rarc + RTF) / (1+RE/RL))

where
RRE = Resistance measured by SIPROTEC relay
RL1 = Line resistance upto fault (need not be considered for settings, as it is accounted for by
the shape of polygon as per siemens manual)
Rarc = Arc resistance
RE/RL = RE/RL setting
I2/I1 = Ratio between E/F currents at the opposite end and local end.
An approximate value of 3 can be assumed as per Siemens manual
RTF = Effective tower footing resistance (An approximate value of 20 can be assumed)
1.2 is a safety factor for the calculated value of the second term. Assuming an Arc length of 2 meters and
minimum fault current of 1kA.

The resistance RL of the line itself can be ignored with SIPROTEC 4 devices. It is taken into account by
the shape of the polygon, provided that the Inclination angle of the polygon Distance angle is not
greater than the Line angle.

The Following are considered as per Siemens manual

Tower footing resistance = 20 Ω

Worst case I2/I1 = 3
Arc Length for PH-PH fault = 3.2 m
Standard value for arc voltage Uarc = 2.5 kv/m
Min PH-PH fault current If = 1000 A
Arc Resistance Rarc Arc length x Arc voltage/If
= 3.2 x 2.5 / 1000
= 8 Ω
Resistive reach tolorence for PH faults = 0.5 x Rarc x 1.2
Primary resistance = 4.8 Ω
Hence R (secondary) = 6.4 Ω

Arc Resistance Calculation for Earth faults

Arc Length for Earth fault = 2 m
Standard value for arc voltage Uarc = 2.5 kV/m
Min E/F fault current If = 1000 A
Arc Resistance Rarc = Arc length x Arc voltage/If x (1+3)
= 2 x 2.5 / 1000 x(1+3)
= 1.25 Ω primary

Time settings for distance zones

tZ1 = 0 sec (Fault is cleared without any trip

delay)
tZ2 = 0.40 sec

(Note 1: In this case zone 2 impedance seen by the relay based on 120% of the protected length. Hence
tZ2 does not need any additional time delay. Grading margin for Zone-2 must take into account Circuit
Breaker operating time including spread of this tim

Zone-3 Timer setting

tZ3 setting is chosen at 1.2 sec, as the estimated max. time of operation of Grid end transformer
primary O/C relays is assumed as 1 sec.

Hence, tZ3 = 1.2 sec

Zone 4 (Reverse) Settings

In this case blocking scheme is not used and current reversal guard is not applicable and hence it may be
set to cover bus bar faults in the reverse direction.

Zone-4 Reactance setting X (Z4) = 1 Ω

tZ4 = 1.00 sec
