Homework 15 Due: July 7th at 7 PM

Problem 1. You take an empty glass jar and push it into a tank of water with the open mouth
of the jar downward, so that the air inside the jar is trapped and cannot get out. If you push the
jar deeper into the water, does the buoyant force on the jar stay the same? If not, does it increase
or decrease? Explain. (Try it and see what happens!)

Problem 2. A cube 5.0 cm on each side is made of a metal alloy. After you drill a cylindrical
hole 2.0 cm in diameter all the way through and perpendicular to one face, you find that the cube
weighs 6.30 N. (a) What is the density of this metal? (b) What did the cube weigh before you
drilled the hole in it?

Problem 3. The liquid in the open-tube manometer in Fig.

12.8a is mercury, y1 = 3.00 cm, and y2=7.00 cm.
Atmospheric pressure is 9.8 x 10^4 Pa. What are (a) the
absolute pressure at the bottom of the U-shaped tube; (b) the
absolute pressure in the open tube at a depth of 4.00 cm
below the free surface; (c) the absolute pressure of the gas in
the container; (d) the gauge pressure of the gas in pascals?
(Note: Mercury has a density of 13.6 x 10^3 kg/m^3)

Problem 4. Preparing to anchor a buoy at the edge of a

swimming area, a worker uses a rope to lower a cubical
concrete block, 0.25 m on each edge, into fresh water (ρwater
= 1000 kg/m3). The block is completely submerged and
moves downward at a constant speed of 1.9 m/s. (a) At what
rate is the force the water exerts on the bottom face of the block increasing? (b) At what rate is
the buoyant force on the block increasing?

Problem 5. A large plastic cylinder with mass 30.0 kg and density 370 kg/m^3 is in the water
of a lake. A light vertical cable runs between the bottom of the cylinder and the bottom of the
lake and holds the cylinder so that 30.0% of its volume is above the surface of the water. What is
the tension in the cable?

Problem 6. A box with volume V and density ρ is supported as

shown. The lower portion of the box is in water (with density ρwater =
1000 kg.m^3 ) and the upper portion is in oil (with density ρoil = 800
kg.m^3 ). Assume that a volume (0:75V ) is in the water. Determine the
box density ρ IF the tension in the cable is zero.
Problem 7. A helium filled balloon is tied to a 2 m long uniform string of mass 0.05 kg. The
balloon is spherical with a radius of 0.4 m. When released, it rises up and eventually reaches an
equilibrium configuration in which a length h of the string is above the ground. Find the length h
given that the balloon has a mass of 0.25 kg (and note that this does not include the mass of the
helium inside the balloon). Use ρhelium = 0.179 kg.m^3 and ρair = 1.20 kgm^3.
