DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

1. Prove that, if f : R → R is continuous at 0 and f (x) = o(x), as x → 0, then f is differentiable at 0.

2. Prove that, if there exists f+ (x0 ), then f is right continuous at x0 .

3. (Mathematical Analysis I, written exam, 18/2/2013.)

Let f (x) and g(x) be two functions, continuous and differentiable in an open neighbourhood of x0 , such
that:
• f (x) < g(x) for all x ∈ I, x ̸= x0 ,
• f (x0 ) = g(x0 ).

Prove that f ′ (x0 ) = g ′ (x0 ).

4. Verify that the point x = 0 is a critical point of the function

{ ( )
x3 4 + sin x1 if x ̸= 0
f (x) =
0 if x = 0.

Find out if x = 0 is a minimum point, a maximum point or an inflection point.

5. Let f : R → R be differentiable in R. Prove that:

• if f is even, then f ′ is odd;

• if f is odd, then f ′ is even.

6. Let f : [a, b] → R be continuous and differentiable in [a, b] (we say that f is differentiable at a, if there
′ ′
exists f+ (a) and f is differentiable at b if there exists f− (b)).

Prove that, if f has a maximum at b, then f− (b) ≥ 0.

7. Find out which is the largest number of local maxima of a polynomial of degree 3.

8. Let f : [10, 100] → R be continuous in [10, 100], differentiable in (10, 100), and such that 2 ≤ f ′ (x) ≤ 3,
for all x ∈ (10, 100).
Assuming that f (10) = 0, find m, M ∈ R such that m ≤ f (x) ≤ M for all x ∈ [10, 100].

9. (*) Let f be a function of class C 2 in R, such that f ′ (0) = 0, and let g(x) = f ( x). Prove that g+

(0)
exists.

10. Let f, g be two functions of class C 1 in R, such that the equation

f (x) = g(x)

has 3 real solutions.

Prove that there exist at least two points x̃ such that the tangent lines to the graphs of f and g, respectively
at (x̃, f (x̃)) and (x̃, g(x̃)), are parallel.
(Hint: use the Mean Value Theorem)
