FRICTION

1. A block (A) weighing 1 kN rests on a rough inclined plane whose inclination to the
horizontal is 45°. This block is connected to another block (B) weighing 3 kN rests
on a rough horizontal plane by a weightless rigid bar inclined at an angle of 30° to
the horizontal as shown in Fig.

Find horizontal force (P) required to be applied to the block (B) just to move the
block (A) in upward direction. Assume angle of limiting friction as 15° at all surface
where there is sliding.
SOLUTION: P = 1.8 KN
2. A uniform ladder of length 3.25 m and weighing 250 N is placed against a smooth
vertical wall with its lower end 1.25 m from the wall. The coefficient of friction
between the ladder and floor is 0.3. What is the frictional force acting on the ladder
at the point of contact between the ladder and the floor? Show that the ladder will
remain in equilibrium in this position.
SOLUTION: Frictional force = 52.1 KN. The maximum force of friction
available at the point of contact between the ladder and the floor = 75 N

3. A block weighing 1500 N, overlying a 10° wedge on a horizontal floor and leaning
against a vertical wall, is to be raised by applying a horizontal force to the wedge.
Assuming the coefficient of friction between all the surface in contact to be 0.3,
determine the minimum horizontal force required to raise the block.

SOLUTION: P = 1418.3 KN
4. A 15° wedge (A) has to be driven for tightening a body (B) loaded with 1000 N
weight as shown in Fig.

If the angle of friction for all the surfaces is 14°, find the force (P), which should be
applied to the wedge.
SOLUTION: P = 232.3 KN
5. Wedges A and B are held in equilibrium by the application of horizontal forces P
as shown in figure. Find the minimum force P required to keep them in equilibrium.
Take coefficient of friction between the wedges as 0.2 and between the wedge B
and the wall as 0.25 and between Wedge A and the floor as 0.3
SOLUTION: P = 217.6 KN
