In your opinion what makes a briefing effective?
An effective briefing is clear and well-structured. It
should start with a simple introduction that states the purpose and main objectives. This helps flight crew know what to expect. The information should be organized logically, focusing on key points to avoid confusion. Using simple language ensures everyone understands. Overall, a clear and interactive briefing leads to better understanding and cooperation.
How do you think aviation will be in the future?
The future of aviation will likely see more advanced
technology and increased efficiency. Planes might use greener energy sources, like electric or hybrid engines, to reduce emissions. We could also see improvements in air traffic management, making flights smoother and reducing delays. Passenger experiences may become more personalized with better in-flight services. Overall, these changes aim to make flying safer, more sustainable, and more comfortable for everyone.
What was the most difficult situation you have had
in flight?
The most challenging situation I faced in flight was
depressurization. We were taking off from GRU to BSB, and at FL220, the cabin altitude warning horn sounded. We quickly declared a pan-pan message to ATC and began an emergency descent to FL100. Once at that altitude, we removed oxygen masks and requested vectors to return to GRU, landing safely. The crew's calm and coordinated actions ensured everyone's safety during this emergency. Can you describe the airport you operated at the most?
I operated mostly at GRU airport because it is my
base and it is near Ubatuba City, my favorite place. GRU is a very friendly airport. There are many links between the airport and downtown. It offers free Wi- Fi access and has good food and beverage areas. In terms of operations, GRU has strong infrastructure with two long parallel runways. This allows for simultaneous operations, even in bad weather.
What's the difference between V1 and V2 speeds?
V1 and V2 are both critical speeds during takeoff. V1
is the speed at which the pilot must decide to continue or perform a reject takeoff. V2 is the speed that ensures the plane can safely clear a 35-foot obstacle after takeoff. Between V1 and V2, there are two other important speeds: VR and Vloft. VR is when the pilot lifts the nose of the airplane off the ground. Vloft is when the main wheels leave the ground, and the plane is fully airborne.
How was your first solo flight?
My first flight as a pilot was thrilling. I didn’t handle
the takeoff or landing on that day, but I was thrilled just to sit in cockpit's right side. It felt almost unreal. The weather was sunny, and everything went smoothly without any stress. I certainly celebrated at home afterward.
What kind of avionics do you think aircraft will be
equipped in the future? In the future, I think aircraft will have advanced avionics with digital flight decks that use touchscreen interfaces for easier control. AI systems will help pilots with weather predictions and automatic flight adjustments. Improved connectivity will allow real-time data sharing with ground operations. Augmented reality might display important data directly in the pilot's view, and automation will increase to reduce workload and enhance safety.
Why do pilots need to take medical exam?
This is important to make sure they are healthy
enough to fly safely. The medical exam checks different things, like vision, hearing, and overall physical health. It also looks at mental health to ensure the pilot is fit to handle the stress of flying. Pilots usually take this exam regularly, such as every year
In your opinion what will communications between
pilots and ATC be like in ten years?
First of all CPDLC is a reality, nowadays, more than
50% of worldwide fleet is CPDLC equipped, in addition to that, in ten years communication will be text provided in order to avoid miss understandings helping pilots to manage their decision makings.
What advice did your flight instructor gave you
before you check ride?
My flight instructor was a very WISE person and very
well standardized pilot, he told me to stay humble, to do everything as we performed during flight instructions and everything will be just fine. My check ride was piece of cake, It was the day I’ve enjoyed at most.
Why the use of ICAO phraseology is important?
Well, there several different types of culture in
world, different types of accents, in order to make it standard to promote flight safety around the world, ICAO phraseology became one of the most important tool to avoid miss understandings between those who in safety operations involved. In the past, a lots of accidents happened due to this difference between people.
How did you became interested in aviation?
Initially my interest in aviation began when I was 9
years old, when I flew for the first time, it was a very exciting flight from GRU to SSA, as soon as we landed I decided to be a pilot, when disembarking I looked through flight attendant’s eyes and I said: We will gonna fly together on day.
When should a pilot perform a missed approach?
Well, a pilot should perform a missed approach
when is not safe to land. This situation can happen due to several reasons, for example, unstable approach, gusty winds, any animal over the runway, even if another aircraft over the runway which decided to leave runway on the last taxiway. In this situation, performing a missed approach helps to maintain flight safety, they can circle the airport and try another approach.
How does a flight simulator help a pilot train for
emergencies? Initially, flight simulator is a very powerful tool that they have in order to improve their skills, is it the right place to make mistakes, doing mistakes elevates your skills, it’s powerful. Being prepared to act in unexpected situations and emergency situations is extremely important, pilot’s do it as the same way they breath to keep them alive. Simulators session 3 times a year contribute to act like that. We are always practicing and studying when not flying.
What was the best piece of advice that your flight
instructor gave you?
The best piece of advice my flight instructor gave
me was to always stay calm, no matter the situation. Staying calm helps you think clearly and make good decisions during a flight. This is very important, especially when facing unexpected situations like bad weather or technical issues. By keeping a clear mind, you can follow procedures and ensure the safety of everyone on board.
How do you think Brazilian aviation will change in
the near future?
I don’t know exactly because global economy
changes a lot In the near future, Brazilian aviation will have more flights and better airport facilities. As the economy grows, there will likely be more demand for domestic and international travel. This means airlines may increase their routes and services. Airports might also get upgrades to handle more passengers and improve the travel experience. What pilots need to take into consideration before performing an emergency evacuation?
Well, first of all, when facing a situation which can
lead to a evacuation you have to stay calm. If the evacuation situation occurs you have to be aware to perform all the checklist involved on that situation in order to have success, avoiding injuries on board. It’s a difficult question because every emergency requires a specific airmanship, a specific way to manage the situation
What has changed in the Brazilian aviation industry
over the past ten years?
In the past 10 years aviation changed a lot, in terms
of engine, they are more efficient, more sustainable, reducing CO2 emission in the atmosphere, they are much more silence too, in terms of avionics they are much more accurate than 10 years ago, helping to reduce pilot’s workload, of course nowadays there much more airplanes flying around the world due to economy improvement. Generally aviation nowadays is much more accessible than before.
What kind of weather can cause problems to an
aircraft?
Flying over Icing conditions and severe turbulence
can be very dangerous. In terms of ice, it can result in engine flame out or even loss of control in flight. Under severe turbulence, when not expected can causer injuries on board or can cause spatial disorientation in pilots, situations like that should be anticipated as soon as possible in order to avoid then How do you prepare for a flight?
Normally I wake up a couple of hours before the
flight and I go gym, because healthy life is extremely recommended in order to maintain our mind online. As soon as I got the airport, I go to the flight dispatch room, where I meet the crew and we talk about a lot of topics, such as weather enroute, flight time, we talk about a CRM, about unexpected situations, after that we go out to the airplane where I perform the walkaround and preflight procedures begins.
How did you star your aviation career?
I started my aviation career in 2005 as a flight
dispatcher at GOL check in counter in CGH airport, it was a very good time, in 2007 being promoted as flight attendant, I learned a lot about pilot’s job because every time I could I would visit the cockpit. Being promoted as a copilot in 2014 I’ve been working as a first office until nowadays, I’ve been working at GOL for approximately 19 years.
How airlines can improve flight safety?
Normally investing in flight training is a good way to
improve flight safety, for example providing more flight simulator sessions, mores standardized procedures, of course better schedules in order to avoid fatigue. By creating more balanced schedules , airlines help pilots get enough rest.
During take off roll how does a pilot know when to
lift off? Well, during preflight procedures pilots should collect all the information about air temperature, pressure, runway length, field elevation, weight and balance of course, all of these information together provides take off speeds for pilots which has to be inserted on flight computer As soon the aircraft is rolling out the pilot monitor call out VR speed to pilot in command and lift off starts.
What did you expected from your first solo flight?
On my first solo flight I expected to be nervous and
anxious but exciting at the same time, it was a very funny day On that day we took off on a high wing single engine aircraft called P56C, everything had been conducted ok.
What can airport authorities do to improve runway
safety?
In order to improve runway safety, airport
authorities can invest in communications, to avoid miss understandings between pilots and ATC, investing in runway markings is also a good idea in order to help pilots while operating in poor weather conditions, investing in fences around airport vicinities is very important to avoid runway incursion
What are the responsibility of pilots during cruise?
During cruise pilots responsibilities are very easy,
basically pilots have to monitor systems, be aware about fuel consumption, weather on destination. Pilots are much more system managers than real flying the airplane, they are just pushing few buttons in there.
In your opinion, what has been the impact of crew
resource management of flight safety?
CRM has a very positive impact in aviation, in the
past 100% of the accidents had been cause by poor relationship between crew members, in the past captain’s word was captain’s law. Nowadays things are very different, 2 pilots is 1 pilot in terms of decision making, they have to work together as a team. They have to maintain a good relationship, leadership, team work, in order to maintain flight safety.
What kind of damage can a bird strike cause to an
aircraft?
A bird strike can cause a several types of damage to
an aircraft, depending the size and speed of the bird and where it hits the plane. One common affected area is the engine. If a bird is sucked in to an engine it can cause engine failure or even engine fire, or power loss. This happens because birds cause damage to engine blades, but pilot’s are trained to handle such as situation.
What is the most difficult phase of flight?
Well, the most difficult phase of flight is take off for
sure, because the airplane is fully in terms of passengers, fuel and cargo. During roll out pilot’s should have to elevate situational awareness in order to monitor every aircraft system. This situation requires engine to work hard and it can be very difficult to deal with in case of engine failure or engine fire, but pilots are trained to handle such as situation.
Who was the best flight instructor? Why?
Well, Guerra was my best flight instructor, he was a
very WISE person, intelligent and very well standardized pilot, he used to transform hard thinks appears very simple, he had a good way to conduct flight instructor. He passed away 5 years ago. I Miss him very much
In your opinion what can airlines do to improve the
working conditions for pilots?
Airlines can improve working conditions for pilots by
focusing in better schedules practices. Pilots can suffer fatigue while working for long hours without adequate rest. I hope airlines work hard in order to prevent unbalanced schedules.
What are your main responsibilities after landing?
First of all the main responsibility is to taxy the
airplane safely until gate position, we should be aware about airplane speed and about another aircraft or vehicle on the ground. Be aware about ATC instructions is very important and follow runway markings are very important also.
What are the main features of the first aircraft you
flew?
The first aircraft I flew was a high wing, single
engine aircraft called P56C. The aircraft was built in a very simple design without electrical or hydraulic system, the aircraft structure was made by hand, can you believe that? I loved to fly that airplane so much
In your opinion what will change in relation to pilot’s
training in the next ten years?
In the next ten years pilot training will likely include
more advanced technology With the rise of automation in the cockpit, pilot’s will need to learn how to manage and monitor these new systems in order to reduce pilot’s workload and be prepare do future aircraft designs.
