Name:_____Answer Key____________ Year 11

1. Find the range of these functions.

a) f(x) = x + 4 , -1 ≤ x < 4
Solution:-
x takes values -1, 0, 1, 2 , 3 and less than 4
f(-1) = -1 + 4 = 3
f(0) = 0 + 4 = 4
f(1) = 1 + 4 = 5
f(2) = 2 + 4 = 6
f(3) = 3 + 4 = 7
f(4) = 4 + 4 = 8

∴ Range = 3≤ f(x) < 8

b) g(x) = 5√𝑥 + 1,2<x≤ 7

g(2) = 5√2 + 1 = 5√3

g(3) = 5√3 + 1 = 5√4 = 10
g(4) = 5√4 + 1 = 5√5
g(5) = 5√5 + 1 = 5√6
g(6) = 5√6 + 1 = 5√7
g(7) = 5√7 + 1 = 5√8 = 10√2

∴ Range = 5√3 < g(x) ≤ 10√2

2. The functions f and g are defined by
f: x -> 3x – 5 and g: x -> (x + 1)2
a) Find gf(x)
Solution:-

gf(x) = g(3x – 5) = ( 3x – 5 + 1 )2 = ( 3x – 4 )2
= ( 3x – 4 ) ( 3x – 4 )
= 9x2 – 24x + 16

b) Solve the equation fg(x)=1

fg(x)= f(x + 1)2 = 3(x+1)2 – 5 = 3(x+1)(x+1) – 5

= 3(x2 + 2x + 1) - 5
= 3x2 + 6x + 3 – 5
= 3x2 + 6x - 2

fg(x)=1

3x2 + 6x – 2 = 1
3x2 + 6x – 3 = 0

On solving this quadratic equation

x = -1 + √2 or -1 - √2

3. Express x2 – 2x – 15 in the form of ( x + a )2 + b

Solution:-

x2 – 2x – 15 = ( x -1)2 – 1 - 15
= ( x -1)2 – 16

4.

Solution:-
(i) f(x) = x2 + 1
y = x2 + 1
x = y2 + 1 ( x ⇔ y)
y2 + 1= x
y2 = x – 1

y = √𝑥 − 1

f-1(x) = √𝑥 − 1 for x ≥ 1

(ii) ff(x) = f(x2 + 1) = (x2 + 1)2 + 1

= (x2 + 1) (x2 + 1) + 1
= x4 + x2 + x2 + 1 + 1
ff(x) = x4 + 2x2 + 2
185
ff(x) =
16
185
x4 + 2x2 + 2 =
16

Multiplying throughout by 16

16x4 + 32x2 + 32 = 185

16x4 + 32x2 + 32 – 185 = 0
16x4 + 32x2 – 153 = 0
16(x2)2 + 32x2 – 153 = 0

Pure Mathematics1 Practice Paper (Ch2) Page 3 of 8

Put x2 = y
16y2 + 32y– 153 = 0

5. Given that f(x) = √3𝑥, g(x) = x – 7 and h(x) = x2, find

a) gh(x)
gh(x) = g(x2)

= x2 - 7

b) fg(x)

fg(x) = f(x - 7) = √3(𝑥 − 7)

c) hg(-3)
hg(x) = h(x – 7) = (x-7)2
= (x-7) (x-7)
= x2 – 14x + 49
Hg(-3) = (-3)2 – 14(-3) + 49
= 9 + 42 + 49
= 100
