INTRODUCTION

The ozone layer, a protective shield of ozone (O3) molecules in

Earth's stratosphere, has been a critical component of our planet's
atmosphere. It has long served as a guardian against the harmful
ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun. Without this natural
barrier, life on Earth would be at risk from increased UV exposure,
leading to severe health and environmental consequences. In this
project we will describe what is ozone layer, its causes and preventive
measures.

5
THE OZONE HOLE AND ITS CAUSES

1. Recently , Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) were used a lot

in the industries and elsewhere to keep things cold and to
make foams and soaps.
2. Strong winds carry CFCs up into the stratosphere
where UV radiations breaks them apart, releasing
chlorine atoms.
3. Each chlorine atom can attack and break apart
(destroy) into 100,000 ozone molecules.
4. The chlorine from CFCs reduce (depletes) the amount
of ozone in the stratosphere.
5. Other ozone-eating chemicals are pesticides such as
methyl bromide halons used in the fire extinguishers,
and methyl chloroform used in industries.

6
EFFECTS OF OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

1.Skin cancer
2.Cataracts
3.Suppression of the immune system
4.Premature aging of the skin
5.Reduced crop growth(uv rays enter stomata of plant burning its
tissue)
6.Destruction of marine life

PREVENTIONS
1.The use of CFCs has to be stopped.
2.Buy the products which are “Ozone friendly” or ”CFCs free”.
3.Substitutes for CFCs should be used (eg. HCFCs, Hydrocarbon ,
Fluorocarbon ).

7
CONCLUSION

 Ozone layer depletion is a deep crisis which leads to increased UV-B

radiation reaching the surface of the Earth affecting humans and all the living
organisms.
 Anthropogenic activities this have been the main cause for ozone layer
depletion leading to global climatic changes in this century.
 This leads to a number of health problems like heat-related issues, skin cancer,
and various other ecological disturbances that affect biotic life.
 Hence every individual should be well aware of the harmful effects of all the
causing agents of ozone layer depletion like CFC, plastics, fossil fuel etc and
should reduce and avoid using them.
 We all should pledge to preserve nature and make this world sustainable for
everyone to live.
