Medicine in the Middle East

Derrick Yeo Anthony Danne

In The history of medicine, whether it is Islamic medicine or Arabic medicine, it refers to the period of time called the Islamic Golden Age. In this period of time, Muslim doctors and pharmacists researched and produced many new kinds of medicines. They had produced some of the most basic forms of modern day medication. Meanwhile, Europe was suffering a downfall in which they lost much important knowledge. This was the result of the fall of the Roman Empire. Many say that this was the Dark Ages of Europe
Ibn Sina , one of the greatest medical researchers in Islamic History

Medical Researchers
In the early years of the Islamic period, the general belief was that Allah produced a cure for every illness, but in the 900 s, two medical thinkers Ibn Sina and Al Razi recorded influential knowledge on medicine. Ibn Sina discovered cancer as a tumor, he described the heart to be working as a valve, and he distinguished anatomy from medicine. Ibn Sina was regarded as the father of modern day medicine. The superior doctor prevents sickness; the mediocre doctor attends to impending sickness; the inferior doctor treats actual sickness.

While many of the other nations made medicines that were hugely based on tradition and religion, the Islamic medical practice was a culture to them. Although it was never really mentioned, medicine was influenced by the western traditions. Many of the old Islamic traditions were twisted together with the medical practices that were being taught in the western world. This was the start of the new era that resembled modern day medicine. Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, China for example, developed a large amount of traditional medicines. Much of the

philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine came from observations of disease and illness by Chinese physicians. It is common thought that medicine evolved from using simple plants to heal wounds and it is also thought to have only arrived in the early 1800 s where it started to be necessary to be used. But, it was the Middle East that took the leap. They changed the simple methods of medicine and evolved it to be the roots of modern day medicine.
