CHAPTER: LPP

1. Solve the following Linear Programming Problem graphically:

(I) Maximise Z = 4x + y; subject to the constraints: x + y ≤ 50, 3x + y ≤ 90, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0.
(II) Minimise Z = 200 x + 500 y; subject to the constraints: x + 2y ≥ 10, 3x + 4y ≤ 24, x ≥ 0,
y ≥ 0.
(III) Minimise and Maximise Z = 3x + 9y; subject to the constraints: x + 3y ≤ 60, x + y ≥ 10, x
≤ y, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
(IV) Minimise Z = – 50x + 20y; subject to the constraints: 2x – y ≥ – 5, 3x + y ≥ 3, 2x – 3y ≤
12, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
(V) Maximise Z = 3x + 4y subject to the constraints: x + y ≤ 4, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0.
(VI) Minimise Z = – 3x + 4 y subject to x + 2y ≤ 8, 3x + 2y ≤ 12, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0.
(VII) Maximise Z = x + y, subject to x – y ≤ –1, –x + y ≤ 0, x, y ≥ 0.
(VIII) Minimise Z = x + 2y subject to 2x + y ≥ 3, x + 2y ≥ 6, x, y ≥ 0.
(IX) Minimise and Maximise Z = 5x + 10 y subject to x + 2y ≤ 120, x + y ≥ 60, x – 2y ≥ 0, x, y
≥ 0.
(X) Minimise and Maximise Z = x + 2y subject to x + 2y ≥ 100, 2x – y ≤ 0, 2x + y ≤ 200; x, y
≥ 0.

2. A manufacturing company makes two types of television sets; one is black and white and the
other is colour. The company has resources to make at most 300 sets a week. It takes Rs 1800
to make a black and white set and Rs 2700 to make a coloured set. The company can spend no
more than Rs 648000 a week to make television sets. If it makes a profit of Rs 510 per black and
white set and Rs 675 per coloured set, how many sets of each type should be produced so that
the company has a maximum profit? Formulate this problem as a LPP given that the objective is
to maximise the profit.

3. A dietician wishes to mix two types of foods in such a way that vitamin contents of the
mixture contain at least 8 units of vitamin A and 10 units of vitamin C. Food ‘I’ contains 2
units/kg of vitamin A and 1 unit/kg of vitamin C. Food ‘II’ contains 1 unit/kg of vitamin A and 2
units/kg of vitamin C. It costs Rs 50 per kg to purchase Food ‘I’ and Rs 70 per kg to purchase
Food ‘II’. Formulate this problem as a linear programming problem to minimise the cost of such a
mixture.

4. Two godowns A and B have a grain capacity of 100 quintals and 50 quintals respectively. They
supply to 3 ration shops, D, E and F whose requirements are 60, 50 and 40 quintals respectively.
The cost of transportation per quintal from the godowns to the shops are given in the following
table:
From/To A B
D 6 4
E 3 2
F 2.50 3
(Transportation cost per quintal (in Rs)
How should the supplies be transported in order that the transportation cost is minimum? What
is the minimum cost?

5. A factory makes tennis rackets and cricket bats. A tennis racket takes 1.5 hours of machine
time and 3 hours of craftsman’s time in its making while a cricket bat takes 3 hour of machine
time and 1 hour of craftsman’s time. In a day, the factory has the availability of not more than
42 hours of machine time and 24 hours of craftsman’s time.
(ii) What number of rackets and bats must be made if the factory is to work at full capacity?
(ii) If the profit on a racket and on a bat is Rs 20 and Rs 10, respectively, find the maximum
profit of the factory when it works at full capacity.
