HEAT TRANSFER ASSIGNMENT -2

Name: Shivangi pal

Roll no.: BT22CME051

Q1. A longitudinal copper fin (k=380 W/m℃) 550mm long and 4mm
in diameter is exposed to air stream at 25℃. The convective heat
transfer coefficient is 18W/m2 ℃. If the fin base temperature is
180℃, determine:
I. The heat transferred
II. The efficiency of the fin.

Solution. Length of the fin, l = 550mm = 0.55m

Diameter of the fin, d = 3mm = 0.004m
The fin base temperature, t0 = 180℃
Air stream temperature, ta = 25℃
Thermal conductivity of fin material, k = 380W/m℃
Convective heat transfer coefficient h = 18W/m2 ℃
I. The heat transferred, Q:
Neglecting the heat loss from the end surface, the heat transfer
from the fin is given by
Q = kAcsm(t0 – ta)tanh(ml)

Q = 380 × ( π4 ×0.004 ) ×6.88 × (180−25) tanh ( 6.88 × 0.55)

= 5.087 W
=5.087×3600 = 1831.032 J/h = 18.31 KJ/h (Ans)

II. The efficiency of the fin, ηfin:

For a fin which is insulated at the tip is given by

tanh ( ml )
η fin =
ml
tanh ⁡(6.88 ×0.55)
= 6.88 ×0.55

= 0.2639 or 26.39%

Q2. The following data relate to a parallel flow heat exchanger in

which air is heated by hot exhaust gases.

Heat transferred per hour = 156000 KJ

Inside heat transfer coefficient = 130W/m2℃

Outside heat transfer coefficient = 210 W/m2℃

Inlet and outlet temperatures of the hot fluid are 500℃ and 200℃
respectively

Inlet and outlet temperatures of the cold fluid are 50℃ and 110℃
respectively

Inside and outside diameters of the tube are 55mm and 70mm

Calculate the length of the tube required for the necessary heat
transfer to occur. Neglect the tube resistance.
Solution.

Given: Q = 156000 KJ/h ; hi =130 W/m2℃ ; ho=210 W/m2℃ ; th1 =

500℃ ; th2 = 200℃ ; tc1 = 50℃ ; tc2 = 110℃ ; Di =0.055m ; Do= 0.07m

Length of each tube, L:

Logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD) is given by

θ1−θ 2 (t h1−t c 1)−(t h2−t c 2)

θm = θ1 = (t h 1−t c 1)

U= 60.43 W/m2℃
Total heat transfer rate is given by
Q = UA θm = U׿ O L)×θ m
Q
L= U × πD o ×θm
