ACTIVITY 11

Media is not inherently positive or negative , however, media and information literacy education
encourages us to strike a healthy balance between exposure to media and information , and other
equally rewarding experiences.

From your everyday media and information consumption , write a short essay tackling the
following themes. You can choose just one of the four suggested themes.

a. What are the beauty and image standards that are being perpetuated in television , print,
radio, and internet right now? How does it affect me? Have I undertaken some behavioral
changes as a response to these media and information texts?
b. What are the means by which media and information texts from television, print, radio, and
the internet glorify negative behaviors? What have I done to exist ?
c. What are the media and information texts that have helped me raise my social , cultural .
and political awareness? Why do you think these media and information texts generated a
heightened awareness of society ?
d. What are the forms by which media and information texts from all sources have helped in
the promotion of positive life and social skills ?

What are the beauty and image standards that are being perpetuated in television , print, radio, and
internet right now? How does it affect me? Have I undertaken some behavioral changes as a response to
these media and information texts?

In other cultures, especially KPOP, most of the global society thinks that they are the most
handsome/beautiful creatures that lives on Earth, to the point that mostly every person or fan tries to
apply those lifestyles to themselves to be “beautiful” as them. From what I have noticed from the media
throughout these years is that media platforms always use “sexy”, “Handsome” and “gorgeous” people
as a subject to every commercial, tv series, etc. People who have seen them think that these celebrities
are the upper standard of beauty, and that is where the beauty and image standards start. As a child
before, these really affected my confidence and gave me insecurities about myself. Thoughts such as
“Why can’t I be someone as handsome as…”, “Why can’t I be slimmer or have a good body such as…”,
and etc. are formed in my head as I compare myself to those celebrities on media platforms. In my
teenage years, or currently, I started to realize that those celebrities are not the standards for true
beauty. Me and myself alone are already beautiful, but some insecurities still exist inside my head. This
changes my behavior, but luckily, I learned. It may have changed my behaviour negatively, but I
managed to turn it upside down. I realized that You are already a standard of beauty, every single one of
us is already the standard of beauty, so if anyone will look like you, me, or anyone in this world, that
person will be beautiful as well.
