Tutorial 12 Balancing
Tutorial 12 Balancing
1. A single-cylinder horizontal engine has a bore of 30.5 cm, and a stroke 40 cm, and a
connecting rod 80 cm long. The mass of the reciprocating parts is 135 kg. When the piston is
at quarter stroke and is moving downwards, the net pressure on it is 65. If the speed of the
engine is 250 rpm, find: 2 N/m
(a) Shaking force on the frame
(b) Shaking Couple on the frame
2. The bearings of a shaft A and B are 5 m apart. The shaft carries three eccentric masses C,
D, and E which are 160 kg, 170 kg, and 85 kg respectively. The respective eccentricity of each
mass, measured from the axis of rotation, is 0.5 cm, 0.3 cm, and 0.6 cm, and the distance
from A is 1.3 m, 3 m, and 4 m. The shaft runs at a speed of 100 rpm.
(a) Determine the angular position of each mass with respect to C so that no dynamic force is
exerted at B, and also find the dynamic force at A for this arrangement.
(b) Let the masses be so arranged so as to give static balance to the system. With this angular
arrangement, determine the dynamic reaction at A and B.
3. Given a dynamically self-balanced system of n rotating masses about a horizontal shaft each
arranged in one of the n axial planes. Show that this configuration of the system also guarantees
gravity balancing (i. e., Net zero moment of gravity forces along the shaft axis)
