Introduction
These sample schemes of work and lesson plans for English and Kiswahili Grades 1, 2 and 3, have been developed by the Tusome team to guide teachers to create their own. They
provide detailed week by week and day by day example activities that can be used to teach learners using Tusome materials, while ensuring that the teachers follow the new
curriculum designs developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
The schemes of work and lesson plans have been developed based on templates provided by the KICD and contain all the components of the Competence Based Curriculum
designs.
Key areas highlighted in the sample schemes of work and lesson plans include the following:
These are the general topics and sub topics of each learning area in the KICD Curriculum Designs. They give the specific skills and sub skills that
learners should attain at the end of a lesson. The teacher should ensure that each lesson has a reference to a sub strand and strand picked from the
Strand/Sub-strand
curriculum designs. In English and Kiswahili language, the four main skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing are covered as strands. Since
skills build on each other, these four strands should not be taught in isolation. Tusome ensures that all these strands are covered in each lesson.
The Competence Based Curriculum has moved from objective based learning to outcome based learning. The teacher is expected to list down
Specific Learning
what will be achieved at the end of each lesson. Learning outcomes focus on learner’s achievement rather than what the teacher is expected to
Outcomes
teach.
These are the questions that will guide the teachers as they teach. These questions are meant to help with learning and are not a form of
Key Inquiry Questions assessment. Key inquiry questions should enhance inquiry learning where learners and the teacher engage in discussions to achieve learning
outcomes.
A core competence refers to the ability to apply appropriate knowledge, skill and attitude to perform a function successfully. The seven core
Core Competencies competencies to be achieved by every learner in basic education are: communication and collaboration, self-efficacy, critical thinking and problem
solving, creativity and imagination, citizenship, digital literacy and learning to learn.
Values are principles or morals obligations. They make one of the key pillars of basic education. Education should promote acquisition of national
Values: values as enshrined in the Kenya Constitution. It should be geared towards developing a self-disciplined and ethical citizen with sound moral and
religious values.
The Competence Based Curriculum ensures that pertinent and contemporary issues (PCIS) facing the society form part of the curriculum. PCIs are
Pertinent and
society challenges experienced as a result of dynamism in various aspects of the society ranging from social, technological, economic, and cultural
Contemporary issues
changes. There are 6 main PCIs covered in the Competence Based Curriculum include citizenship, health education, life skills and values education,
(PCIs)
non-formal programs and community service and parental engagement.
