AIM:-
To study the factor on which the self
inductance of a coil depends. By observing the
effect on the coil when is put in series with a
bulb in a circuit fed up by an A.C.source due
to insertion of a metallic rod.
INTRODUCTION:-
Self-induction is a fundamental concept in
electromagnetism, particularly in the context
of inductors such as solenoids.

Self-induction refers to the phenomenon

where a changing electric current in a coil
induces an electromotive force (emf) in the
same coil. This occurs due to the change in
magnetic flux through the coil, which is
created by the changing current. According to
Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction, a
changing magnetic flux induces an emf in a
circuit.
APPLICATIONS
Understanding the self-induction of a
solenoid is essential for designing and
analysing circuits that involve inductors and
transformers, as well as in various
applications in electronics and
electromechanical systems.
1. Storing Energy: Inductors are like energy
storage units that hold electrical energy in a
magnetic field.
2. In Different Devices: They're used in things
like tuning circuits, sensors, and motors to
make them work.
3. Transforming Energy: Inductors are also
part of transformers, which change electrical
energy from one form to another.
4. Transforming Energy: Inductors are also
part of transformers, which change electrical
energy from one form to another.
APPARATUS:-
A coil of large turns, a.c. source, an electrical
bulb, step down transformer, a soft iron rod,
one way key, connecting wires etc.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:-

PROCEDURE:-
1.Make all connections as shown in the
circuit diagram.

2.Switch on the A.C. supply.The bulb glows

3.Now, put the soft iron rod inside the

conductor core & check the brightness of
bulb. The resistance increases and the
current & brightness both decreases.

RESULT:-
1.The current in the circuit decrease on
inserting the iron rod in the core of coil at
constant frequency of applied voltage &
brightness of bulb decreases & vice-versa.

PRECAUTIONS:-
1. The coil should have large number of
turns.

2. Current should be passed for a small time

to avoid the heating effect.
DRAWBACKS:-
1. The resistance of circuit may increase
slightly due to heating effect of current.

2. There may be eddy current in soft iron

coil.

CONCLUSION:-
Overall, the self-inductance of a solenoid is a
vital parameter that defines its behaviour in
electrical and electromagnetic applications,
making it a fundamental concept in the study
of electromagnetism and electrical
engineering.
