FALL 2024

TUTORIAL: SolidWorks MBD Overview

DATE: October 16, 2024

NAME:

Ryan Purdy

Report 5
This tutorial provided an overview of several SolidWorks MBD functions through the process of
preparing a variety of views of the kick pedal model and structuring them into a single document. First,
we configure a bill of materials for the model, which lists and numbers each part of the kick pedal. We
then isolated the footboard part and created a new display state and 3D view, as seen below. We then
followed the same process for the grey footboard, capturing a second 3D view.

Next, we prepared a view of the pedal’s side profile. The 3D view was already created, and we hid the
dimensions and added bubbles, labeling the different components in the model. These labels utilize the
numbers assigned to each part by the bill of materials we configured earlier. We capture this new 3D
view, as seen below.

Next, we created an exploded view in which several components are separated from the model to clarify
design intent. We oriented ourselves in the isometric view and created an exploded view. In this view we
separated the base, the screws, and the beater shaft from the main model through a series of three
exploded steps. We then captured another 3D view, as seen below.

Finally, we’re ready to organize these views into a 3D pdf. We set up the pdf with the provided template,
then arrange different views in the appropriate windows. The tutorial instructs to make a few other
alterations on each page of the document, and then we’re ready to publish.

Through this tutorial I gained experience in preparing and capturing 3D views of a model. However,
some steps still remain unclear. For example, at one point we are told to use “Copy Scheme” on the grey
configuration of the pedal, but I don’t know what this scheme was actually used for. Also I don’t
understand why the PDF was configured in the way the tutorial prescribed; I think I’ll need more
experience preparing these documents before I feel fully confident in my understanding.
