The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice and
carries 4 marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
29 Although the requirement of vitamins and minerals is always in small quantities, they are
essential for the healthy functioning of the human body. To debunk the common misconception it
becomes important to state that vitamins do not provide energy to the body, unlike proteins, fats,
and carbohydrates. However, vitamin deficiencies can lead to severe diseases. Minerals also
perform similar functions as vitamins. Minerals are not formed in our body therefore they have to
be incorporated into the human diet. Even water contains certain minerals in it. The sources of
vitamins and minerals are present in our everyday food that is why it is suggested to include a
variety of food sources from animal products to plant products. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in
the body’s fatty tissues as well as the liver. However, the storage capacity for water-soluble
vitamins is limited therefore it calls for regular consumption of these vitamins. Water-soluble
vitamins can be absorbed by the bloodstream from the small intestine directly. Fat-soluble
vitamins are absorbed by the liver through the bloodstream. Chylomicrons and fatty acids are
formed at first using these fat-soluble vitamins. The lymphatic system transports this to the
bloodstream. When the body is devoid of vitamins and minerals due to inadequate diet, the ability
of the body to fight diseases lessens as well as the body becomes prone to issues like
osteoporosis (brittle bones).
30. Basicity of amines increases with increasing negative charge on nitrogen. Conjugated
amines are less basic than comparable non-conjugated amines, since the lone pair is delocalized
into the pi-bond. Inductive effects (nearby electron-withdrawing groups) reduce the basicity of
amines. The basicity of NH2 will be decreased if it is next to a ‘pi-acceptor‘ such as C=O to which
it can donate a pair of electrons. The basicity of nitrogen is highest for sp 3-hybridized nitrogen
and is lowest for sp-hybridized nitrogen . Nitrogen in pyrrole is unusually non-basic. In fact, even
when subjected to acid, pyrrole reacts at carbon (C-2), and not on the nitrogen. Pyridine is far
more basic than pyrrole .
