III. Find the solution of each of the following optimization problems.

1. Find two positive numbers such that their product is 192 and the sum of the
first plus three times the second is a minimum.
2. A gardener wants to make a rectangular enclosure using a wall as one side
and 120 m of fencing for the other three sides. Express the area in terms of x,
and find the value of x that gives the greatest area.
3. Suppose you had 102 m of fencing to make two side-by-side enclosures as
shown. What is the maximum area that you could enclose?
4. A manufacturer wants to design an open box having a square base and a
surface area of 108 square inches. What dimensions will produce a box with
maximum volume?
5. A cylindrical metal container, open at the top, is to have a capacity of 24 cu.
in. The cost of material used for the bottom of the container is $0.15/sq. in.,
and the cost of the material used for the curved part is $0.05/sq. in. Find the
dimensions that will minimize the cost of the material, and find the minimum
cost.

PERFORMANCE TASK 2

I. Log Me In
Use the graph to determine the absolute extrema of the function and where the
extrema occur. Does this function have critical numbers? If so, how many on the
closed interval [a, b]? MCC@WCCUSD (HUSD), 2012.

II. Research five examples of the use of extreme value theorem in real life. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Scoring Rubric: Two points will be given for every correct example.

III. Find out what you have learned in this lesson by answering the questions below
on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Describe an optimization problem.

2. How can we solve optimization problems?
3. Mention past topics in mathematics that you applied on the last activity to
solve optimization problems.
