4th and 5th characters - specifies the particular component, circuit or fault (eg starter relay)
6th and 7th characters - referred to as the 'Failure Type Byte' (FTB) which indicates the particular failure (eg 11 =
short circuit to ground). See FTB Numbers below for a full list.
Some specific fault codes are defined by international standard, while other codes may be defined by individual
vehicle manufacturers.
Fault Code Display
Depending on the machine specification fault codes recorded by the engine ECU can be accessed and displayed
in several ways:
CAN Enabled Display
The machine may be equipped with a CAN enabled display. Such a display will be capable of displaying all
recorded codes, for example P0047. All logged codes will be displayed. The operator may also have a facility to
erase the fault code log. See the applicable machine documentation for further information.
CAN BUS Connected Computer
Error codes logged can be accessed via a suitable laptop computer running the applicable diagnostics software,
JCB 444 Engine Diagnostics for example. The computer must be connected to the machine CAN BUS socket
using a data link adapter (DLA). Once connected all recorded codes can be displayed. The engineer also has a
facility to erase the fault code log.

Service Procedure
Important: Stop the engine and let it cool before you start work. Do not start the engine during the service
procedures. (SN0001)
1. Check for any damaged or loose machine earths and connector pins as well as debris or water inside the
connector terminals. This may be as a consequence of pressure washing the engine, loose connectors or
poor connector sealing.
1. Check the harness is not damaged and is routed correctly.
2. Complete the testing procedure described in the component page Inlet metering valve.

1. Check that the fuel tank has sufficient fuel in it.
2. Complete the injector leak back test testing procedure described in fuel system diagnostic test.
3. Check the fuel lift pump flow, If the lift pump is inoperative check the lift pump relay.
4. If the fuel lift pump is still inoperative check the voltage, current and resistance at the pump.
5. Check for correct hose routing, restrictions or leaks from the fuel pipes. Make sure that fuel pipes have not
been trapped under other assemblies (e.g. cooling pack, hydraulic system components).
6. Replace fuel filters.
7. Check the lift pump is delivering sufficient fuel. Refer to fuel lift pump test.
8. Check the low pressure fuel system for restrictions such as: Blockages, damaged hoses, blocked fuel filters,
damaged in tank fuel pick up.
9. Check high pressure fuel pump, common rail and injector leak off and repair as required.
10. Check for any damaged or loose machine earths and connector pins as well as debris or water inside the

1. Check all of the DEF lines for kinks or bends.
2. If a P204B-02 code has been generated and the machine is used mainly for low duty cycles, the fault may be
able to be cleared by working the machine harder periodically. Make sure that the ECU software is up to
date. Refer to bulletins and the machine help files for full details.
3. Remove the DEF lines and check for any signs of blockages or contamination.
4. Inspect the supply module filters (main filter and pre-filter). Replace the filters as required.
5. Make sure that the DEF tank has not been overfilled.
6. Perform the DEF dosing quantity test test and confirm the system is able to purge correctly.
7. Remove the dosing module and clean any deposits from the tip. Refer to dosing module.

9. If inducement is active and the machine is in forced idle, make sure the problem has been rectified. Start the
engine and operate the machine to load the engine and increase the exhaust temperature, the temperature
needs to exceed 150°C. This will allow the SCR system to prime and run through the diagnostic process,
once complete and all diagnostics have passed the fault will clear. This process can take up to 5 minutes. In
order to regain full power, follow the fault clearance procedure in reduced power mode (engine derate).

Open circuit and short circuit fault codes relate to wiring faults detected between the NOx sensor exhaust probe
and the Sensor Control Unit (SCU). The SCU is the unit that the machine wiring harness plugs into. As the
exhaust probe and SCU is a single item, an open or short circuit fault is likely to require sensor replacement.
Voltage fault codes relate to an error detected in the power supplied to the NOx sensor unit and suggest a
problem within the machine harness or power supply. As 12 and 24 volt sensors exist, check that the sensor
voltage shown on the SCU matches the machine voltage.

Information
ECU Aftertreatment system ECU.
Heater fault codes can be caused by a faulty NOx sensor power supply. Always resolve any voltage error fault
codes before rechecking and resolving heater fault codes.
The DEF tank and both NOx sensors use the same power source and relay.
Service Procedure
Important: Stop the engine and let it cool before you start work. Do not start the engine during the service
procedures. (SN0001)
1. Check for additional fault codes. Repair as required.
2. Check for any damaged or loose machine earths and connector pins as well as debris or water inside the
connector terminals. This may be as a consequence of pressure washing the engine, loose connectors or
poor connector sealing.
3. Check the harness is not damaged and is routed correctly.
4. Complete the testing procedure described in the component page downstream NOx sensor.

procedures. (SN0001)
1. Check for any damaged or loose machine earths and connector pins as well as debris or water inside the
connector terminals. This may be as a consequence of pressure washing the engine, loose connectors or poor
connector sealing.
2. Check the harness is not damaged and is routed correctly.
3. Check the DEF quality is within tolerance. Refer to DEF Quality Test. If the DEF quality is within tolerance,
replace the head unit.

Information
ECU Engine ECU/ aftertreatment ECU.
Service Procedure
Important: Stop the engine and let it cool before you start work. Do not start the engine during the service
procedures. (SN0001)
1. Complete the testing procedure described on the component page Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT).
2. Check for any damaged or loose machine earths and connector pins as well as debris or water inside the
connector terminals. This may be as a consequence of pressure washing the engine, loose connectors or poor
connector sealing.
3. Check the harness is not damaged and is routed correctly.
4. Complete the testing procedure described in the component page CAN communication error.

1. Using the SM tool, General tab, check the Engine System Number (ESN) values are the same for both the
ECU and DCU.
2. Flash the DCU and/or Engine ECU with the correct software for the machine.
3. Refer to the Re-flashing an ECU help page for more information

5. The fault is that the DCU calibration does not match the ECU calibration power rating.
1. A DCU or ECU has been swapped from another machine.
2. The machine has not been built correctly.
1. Using SM Setup Tool, General Tab. Check the ESN values are the same for both
engine ECU and DCU.
2. Flash the DCU and/or the engine ECU with the correct software for the machine.
3. The system has been tampered with.
3. Check for tampering such as after market ECUs on the 250k machine CAN bus.
